Reuters Jim Marshall, builder of amplifiers, poses with one of his products at the ‘Musikmesse’ in Frankfurt in March, 2002.

Jim Marshall, the inventor who changed the sound of rock music, has died at age 88, according to a statement issued by the company that bears his name.

A drummer by trade, in the early ‘60s Marshall invented what became known as the Marshall Jtm 45 guitar amplifier, seen by many guitarists as an improvement over the then-state-the-art Fender Bassman.  In subsequent years, »

Lee Ranaldo – Between The Tides and The Times Album Review

24 March 2012 10:57 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Think of Sonic Youth. When most, and I imagine you’re no different, think of Sonic Youth they think of noise rock’s power couple. Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon, would be the most often name checked and revered persons that come to mind, indie icons as they are. Sonic Youth’s own Lennon and McCartney, with more sexual tension. Actually, sexual release and fulfilment I’d speculate given that they got married and had a daughter. Which is a darn sight more than Lennon and McCartney managed with their working relationship. If only though.

Anyhow, yes, it’s alternative’s own Mr and Mrs Right (though now in line for a divorce, as any review of this album seems adverse to not mentioning or anything in relation to Sonic Youth, I’m no different it seems, whatever) or Lennon/McCartney that come to mind when musing on Sonic Youth, »

Sprung! Favorite New Rock Singles for Early Spring 2012

7 March 2012 6:52 AM, PST | www.culturecatch.com | See recent CultureCatch news »

Here's eleven of my favorite new rock tunes for your early spring listening pleasure. Enjoy the melodic sunshine, people.

"Eskimo Kiss" The Kooks Junk of the Heart (Astralwerks)

Not sure why my fellow critics insist on dropping the "sounds like The Strokes" tag on these Brits. And some scribes have whined they aren't "edgy" enough. So what. I hear more of The Kinks and The La's as reference points. And to me, that's much better company if you love more pop in your rock. Case in point, the infectious ear candy of "Eskimo Kiss," my pick hit from their latest long player (LP). Currently on tour in the U.S. of A.

"Stay At Home" Yellow Ostrich Strange Land (Barsuk)

Speaking of the Strokes...I hear more than a hint of their aggro-guitar pop rock in this very fine track from former Wisconsinite/current New Yorker Alex Schaaf. His newly »

AfterElton Briefs: Kris Allen is "The Vision Of Love," The Olympics Diversity Quiz, and "Smash" Rebounds

6 March 2012 1:26 PM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Adam chats with his great-grandmother. Oh wait ... it's Kelly Osbourne.

Happy Birthday to Kiki Dee, who is 65, Stephen Schwartz is 64, Connie Britton is 45, Eddie Deezen is 54, and David Gilmour is 66. Time to name your top five Pink Floyd songs. Here are my picks: 5. "Another Brick In The Wall'," 4. "Learning To Fly," 3. "Wish You Were Here," 2. "Comfortably Numb," 1. "Welcome To The Machine".

The 2012 London Olympics has released a "Diversity and Inclusion Quiz" for Olympic volunteers to help them deal with certain situations that may arise. In the gay section is this scenario: A spectator made "very uncomfortable" by two men sitting next to him holding hands. The choices are "tell him to stop being a homophobic idiot" or "politely ask the couple to stop holding hands" or "explain that there is a huge diversity of people at the London 2012 Games, which includes gay, lesbian and bisexual individuals and couples." Hmm, I can't decide. »

Immerse Yourself Into Pink Floyd's The Wall

24 February 2012 10:42 AM, PST | TheInsider.com | See recent The Insider news »

Roger Waters is still touring solo with The Wall, building it brick by brick and then knocking it down nightly, and if you haven't had an opportunity to experience this absolute requirement of rock history, the next best thing available is to get your wormy little hands on the Pink Floyd: The Wall Immersion Box Set, available February 28.

Bands like Radiohead, Muse and even Gorillaz and Nine Inch Nails owe a tremendous debt to Pink Floyd (whose lineup was comprised of Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright), who arguably blazed the widest swath out there in the progressive/psychedelic rock genre and one-upped The Who's Tommy with their own take on the Rock Opera.

Garbage Drops New Single!

Released in November of 1979, The Wall shot Pink Floyd to the top of the charts on the strength of the first single, Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2). Already riding high on the phenomenal success of 1973's »

Roger Waters on Pink Floyd's break-up: 'Success ruined us'

19 January 2012 8:19 AM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Roger Waters has claimed that achieving global fame and success only served to destroy Pink Floyd. The musician spoke about his past feuds with bandmates David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright during his appearance on The Howard Stern Show on Wednesday (January 18). Waters explained that Pink Floyd's dynamic changed considerably following the release of their classic album Dark Side of the Moon. "1973, Dark Side of the Moon was the first time we made any cash," he told Stern. "We were reasonably generous with one another at that time. I think once you've achieved that measure of success, you've really done what it was that you set out to do together. "From then on it was really about clinging to the trademark in a kind of frightened way, not wanting to lose the umbrella with the words (more) »

David Gilmour Dismisses Pink Floyd Olympics Reunion Reports

4 January 2012 6:03 AM, PST | National Ledger | See recent National Ledger news »

Rocker David Gilmour has squashed reports suggesting the living members of Pink Floyd will reunite for a London Olympics spectacular. The guitar great has been quick to respond to a London Evening Standard story, which linked the band to the summer (2012) sports extravaganza, insisting there's nothing to the report. A representative for the rocker says, "David Gilmour can confirm that there is no truth in recent media speculation about Pink Floyd reuniting to perform for the 2012 London Olympics." If true, the show would have marked the band's first official performance together since Live 8 in 2005. Gilmour and former bandmates Nick Mason and Roger Waters teamed up for a brief reunion at Waters' The Wall concert in London last year (May 2011) - but all parties declared the get together was a one-off. Roger Taylor and Brian May have also been linked to an Olympics-launching spectacular, as has Sir Paul McCartney. At present, »

Pink Floyd's David Gilmour denies 2012 Olympics reunion

3 January 2012 12:52 PM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

David Gilmour has denied reports that Pink Floyd will reunite in the summer. A report from the London Evening Standard had claimed that the band will perform at the upcoming London Olympic Games alongside Sir Paul McCartney. A source had said: "It's long been made clear it would take something very special to get Pink Floyd back together again and it doesn't get any bigger than the Olympics. "Like Sir Paul, they have been a major part of the nation's culture over the past 40 years and it will be very fitting that they're involved when London is on show to the world. It's hoped everything can be (more) »
