Christopher Meloni leaves 'Svu' -- so who should take his place?

The news that Christopher Meloni won't return to "Law & Order: Svu" next season blindsided fans of the long-running series. The question now is: Who fills Elliot Stabler's shoes?

NBC and "Svu's" producers are reportedly searching for a "big name" to take over for Meloni, who's been with the show since its debut in 1999. In addition to being well-known, though, the guy (and we're assuming it will be a guy, so as to preserve the male-female dynamic between the lead detectives) who takes over for Meloni will need to have chemistry with co-star Mariska Hargitay and, if not match the intensity Meloni brought to Stabler, at least command attention in a similar way.

We don't know if any of the six actors below are "big" enough for NBC, but we think they'd all do fine work on "Svu."

Seth Gilliam in The Good Wife Season Finale

5 May 2011 6:39 AM, PDT | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

Now here is a juicy factoid which came direct from TV Line. The exclusive reported, the co-creator of CBS’ The Good Wife, Robert King, is a Wire-aholic. King told THR, his plans are “to keep running down the line until everyone from The Wire is on the show.” Hey, I don’t think that would be a bad thing.

Actor Seth Gilliam has signed the dotted line to appear in The Good Wife‘s season finale. He was gt. Carver on “the late HBO drama,” The Wire. The episode will air May 17th and Gilliam will play “a man on trial for killing a judge.” Ruh-roh. TV Line said, “for those keeping track at home, that brings to 12 the number of Wire grads who have appeared on Good Wife since the show’s inception two years ago.” Cool.

Actress Kelli Giddish will also be seen around the set.

His name is Robert King. And he’s a Wire-aholic.

The co-creator of CBS’ The Good Wife — who recently confessed to The Hollywood Reporter that he’s “going to keep running down the line until everyone from The Wire is on the show” — has tapped Seth Gilliam (a.k.a.
