Calvary sees The Guard writer/director John Michael McDonagh team up once again with Brendan Gleeson, here playing a priest who must confront the darker aspects of his community after his life is threatened during confession. Seemingly a million miles away from the fun of The Guard, Calvary still has some humour running through, albeit of the darker variety, and the below trailer promises some cracking dialogue (the exchange on when it is deemed o.k. to kill is especially good) and an impressive cast, including Aiden Gillen, Dylan Moran, Chris O'Dowd, and Domhaill Gleeson. Released: 11th April 2014 (Irl/U.K.) »

Remember the quite wonderful The Guard? If you've not seen it, do consider checking it out. It's from writer-director John Michael McDonagh, and sees Brendan Gleeson playing a particularly disinclined Irish law enforcement officer, forced to work with Don Cheadle's hyper-efficient FBI man.
McDonagh's new film, Calvary, has now been confirmed to play the Sundance Film Festival at the start of 2014, and it reunites him with Brendan Gleeson again. Furthermore, Chris O'Dowd, Kelly Reilly, Aidan Gillen, Dylan Moran and Marie-Josee Croze are in the cast.
It's a black comedy, and the first trailer for the film has just been released. We don't have a UK release date yet, but we'll let you know when we get one...

Several years ago, Brendan Gleeson and writer-director John Michael McDonagh scored a Sundance hit with the low-key dark comedy "The Guard." Sundance 2014 finds them reuniting for more bleak laughs and some religious introspection in "Calvary," with "Bridesmaids" star Chris O'Dowd in tow. The film's first trailer (above) gives you an idea of what to expect from the Bergman-esque tale of an idealistic priest (Gleeson) who finds himself seeing the world in a new light after receiving a death threat during a confession. It also stars Irish comedian Dylan Moran, Kelly Reilly ("Flight"), Isaach de Bankolé ("The Limits of Control") and Aidan Gillen, so memorable on »

Calvary was recently confirmed to make its world premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. The Guard director John Michael McDonagh reunites with his brilliant lead Brendan Gleeson in this darkly comic story of a priest who finds himself threatened during a private confession and is unsure what to do or even take it serious.
I’m a huge fan of the Irish actor from everything from big blockbusters like Braveheart and Gangs Of New York to indie gems The General and I Went Down. Of course, most will remember him for the Harry Potter franchise and the awesome In Bruges.
The superb supporting cast is filled with hilarious familiar faces with the likes of Chris O’Dowd and Dylan Moran lending their perfect dry Irish humour to the film also starring Kelly Reilly, Aidan Gillen and Marie-Josée Croz.

Yesterday, we reported that the 2014 Sundance Film Festival had chosen John Michael McDonagh's Calvary to play in the "Premieres" category. The dark comedy stars Brendan Gleeson as a good priest who wants to do well by his community, but his life is threatened by an unknown assailant during confession. Judging by the trailer, this is far less comedic than McDonagh and Gleeson's previous collaboration, The Guard, but still entertaining in its own way. The film also has a strong cast of supporting players, which includes Chris O’Dowd, Kelly Reilly, Aidan Gillen, Dylan Moran, and Marie-Josée Croz. Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The 2014 Sundance Film Festival runs from January 16 – 26th. Here's the synopsis for Calvary: Calvary is a blackly comedic drama about a priest tormented by his community. Father James is a good man intent on making the world a better place. When his life »

The line-up of films premiering at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival has been released, and there are a lot of good movies, one of which includes The Raid 2, which I am incredibly excited to see! It's easily my most anticipated film at the festival.
The Sundance Film Festival takes place from January 16th to the 26th in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance, Utah. From the press release:
John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, said, “The Premieres and Documentary Premieres sections of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival feature new work from many established independent filmmakers who began their careers at our Festival years ago, which allows us to reflect on the impact, legacy and growth of the independent film movement over the past 30 years.”
Trevor Groth, Director of Programming for the Sundance Film Festival, said, “In many of the films selected for our 2014 Sundance Film Festival, we see fascinating characters and subjects throughout. »

Brendan Gleeson and The Guard's writer-director John Michael McDonagh have reunited for Calvary, another tale of a tortured soul but one who's a good bit more morally sound. The first trailer for the film has arrived online. As opposed to the drunken, corrupt cop of The Guard, the new dark comedy will follow Gleeson’s Father James Lavelle, a priest with a good heart whose mission in life is to make the world a better place. But he’s constantly disappointed by the hateful, argumentative and downright bitter attitudes of the other inhabitants in his small county town. Events take a turn into even darker territory when his life is threatened during confession…McDonagh has gathered quite the cast around his main man, with Chris O’Dowd, Kelly Riley, Aidan Gillen, Dylan Moran and Domhnall Gleeson among those who populate the tiny location. From the looks of this, it »
Set to premiere at Sundance is John Michael McDonagh's (The Guard) new film, Calvary, which reteams him with Brendan Gleeson as a priest tormented by his community. Father James is a good man intent on making the world a better place. When his life is threatened one day during confession, he finds he has to battle the dark forces closing in around him. The film, again, is a dark comedy and along with Gleeson it co-stars Chris O'Dowd, Kelly Reilly, Aidan Gillen, Dylan Moran, Marie-Josee Croze, Isaach De Bankole, Domhnall Gleeson and David Wilmot. Today the first trailer for the film has arrived courtesy of The Guardian as it will hit UK theaters on April 11, 2014, though it does not yet have a Us distributor. Sony Classics picked up The Guard so I wouldn't be surprised to see the same happen with this one following its Sundance premiere. Check out the trailer below. »

Variety reports that Tribeca are unearthing one of the better U.S indie items to have played at the recent Toronto Int. Film Fest. Featuring a young ensemble with raw performances from the likes of Callan McAuliffe and Emory Cohen (we noted the pair in our top new faces list) Aron Gaudet & Gita Pullapilly’s Beneath the Harvest Sky will be the small town ennui/blue chip” (stealing this one from another news item) to catch in ’14.
Gist: This tells the story of Casper (Emory Cohen) and Dominic (Callan McAuliffe)— two best friends that are fiercely loyal to one another, as they come of age in a small farming town in Maine. During harvest break, Casper is drawn into smuggling drugs across the Canadian border with his outlaw father, Clayton (Aidan Gillen). Meanwhile, Dominic works his final potato harvest, hoping to earn the money he needs to buy a car »

The Sundance Film Festival made their final feature film line-ups with the Premieres category announcements. Sixteen films with huge name talent, returnee filmmakers and plenty of buyer interest/and future all night wheeling, and dealing.
After breaking out in Park City with The Guard, John Michael McDonagh returns (alongside actor Brendan Gleeson) the much anticipated Calvary. Mike Cahill (alongside actress Brit Marling) returns with more sci-fi terrain with, I Origins. Jake Paltrow who managed to sink instead of swim with The Good Night, was again surfaces with Young Ones. An unusually strong international flavor pervades the Sundance Film Festival’s Premieres slate, with new pictures from British helmer Michael Winterbottom, Irish directors Lenny Abrahamson and John Michael McDonagh, Dutch filmmaker Anton Corbijn, Welsh-born action maven Gareth Evans and Iranian-born French auteur Marjane Satrapi figuring prominently among the 17 world-premiere titles unveiled today alongside the Documentary Premieres section.

For director of programming Trevor Groth, the flowering of international auteur talent in Premieres is the result of a considered effort that began shortly after he and fest director John Cooper launched their first edition in 2010. While their immediate focus was on beefing up the dramatic competition as a showcase for new filmmakers, broader international outreach across all sections of the festival became a similar priority.
“I think we’ve really built the dramatic competition up in a way that it’s firing at the level we always hoped it would, »

The Sundance Film Festival announced the titles selected to screen in its out-of-competition Premieres and Documentary Premieres sections. Last year, the movies that were launched in these categories — which typically highlight filmmakers who’ve appeared at Sundance before — included Before Midnight, Don Jon, and The Way Way Back; this year appears to be just as promising. In Lynn Shelton’s Laggies, a young woman stuck in arrested-development (Keira Knightley) has her life upended by an unexpected marriage proposal. In David Wain’s They Came Together — surely, a naughty pun, yes? — Wet Hot American Summer alums Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd »
