This Is England '88: This Is Forgiveness

Commenting on the commentators with Simon Columb...

Euan Ferguson writes in The Observer about the recent TV and, crucially, the outstanding This Is England '88:

"Tellingly, I thought, the hugs said it all. When members of the old bunch hugged, even after estrangement, it was real. When Woody and new girl Jen tried to group-hug the dreadful boss Mr Squires and his new woman, after an increasingly drunken 'bonding' meal at Christmas – yes, it was set at Christmas, and a far truer one than you'll see depicted elsewhere in the next week – glasses and chairs and napkins got all in the way; it couldn't have been more excruciatingly, wittily stilted. When Woody and Lol hugged at the end, apparently reunited, it was very real. This was all phenomenal, partly because you feel the actors thoroughly love and suffer with their deeply etched characters. Roll on their next story, and »

This Is England, Shane Meadows's coruscating, dark, joyous and hauntingly watchable drama following a gang of friends, desperately amiable misfits, growing up before our eyes in a chill northern town, first exploded on to the big screen five years ago and has now had two TV sequels – the film was set in 1983, the follow-ups in '86 and '88. It is fast becoming not just a drama but our collective memory of the years most of us have lived through together.

We can relive them, and reflect. On all the changes, for good and for ill, the speed of which we »

TV Review: This Is England 88 Part 1

14 December 2011 1:19 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

In Shane Meadows’ excellent 2006 film This Is England we saw how a group of young skinheads dealt with life in Thatcher’s England in 1983. That was followed up last year by a Channel 4 t.v. series which caught up with the gang three years later in ’86 and during the summer with the Football World Cup as the main focus point of much of England. We now catch up with them again during the Christmas of ‘88 in a three part special, the first of which aired on our screens last night.

Meadows’ latest outing in 80s Northern England sees the same characters return to our screens with Shaun (Thomas Turgoose) and Smell (Rosamund Hanson) continuing their relationship, but with Shaun’s attention wandering. Lol (Vicky McClure) is struggling to raise her daughter Lisa, conceived whilst cheating on her then boyfriend Woody (Joe Gilgun) with his best mate Milky (Andrew Shim »

My TV Christmas cracker: This is England '88

13 December 2011 6:23 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

The tone is still 80s bleak, but This is England '88 is not without its lighter moments

Interview: This is England '88's Joe Gilgun

This year, the TV run-up to Christmas Day seems to be filled with more spurious festive specials than ever. Take your pick from The Only Way Is Essexmas (well-jel bells?) to Deal Or No Deal: The Panto (Noel "Noël" Edmonds as the Genie), or Christmas Coach Trip (doing motorway arguments for you).

Balancing that merry lot comes This Is England '88, the next instalment of Shane Meadows's continuing excavation of his Sheffield childhood that Channel 4 first explored last year with This is England '86.

Showing over the next three nights, it's a drama so unafraid to go to the dark side that it includes a scene where Lol watches the 1988 Christmas EastEnders special for light relief.

Emmerdale misfit Joe Gilgun is most at home with the This Is England gang

9 December 2011 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Dual role in Misfits shows the Chorley actor's subtlety but he's so close to Shane Meadows' Woody he'd have sex with his scooter

I meet Joseph Gilgun giddy and relieved, following an audition for a part he's clearly dying to get. It's like I've arrived mid-conversation as he hurls head-first into stories about the pint he's just had with a "crackhead", his publicist's rapping abilities and how Twitter can "get to fuck". He is dressed with slick northern style and covered in tattoos. He talks in a thick Chorley accent, peppering his tales with expletives. Frankly, keeping him on topic is near impossible. He veers from his original point more times than the Wife of Bath. But he is warm and sharp, and the punchlines begin to feel unimportant when the journey there is so much fun.

Gilgun is best known for his role as Woody, the affable skinhead leader in This Is England. »

Close up: Angelina Jolie and Tom Cruise master 'The Meh'

8 December 2011 10:01 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Angelina Jolie and Tom Cruise dismiss a lawsuit and a rumour as 'par for the course' and 'ludicrous'

The big story

Celebrity gesture of the week? The shrug.

Angelina Jolie sported one as a lawsuit claiming her directorial debut was nicked from a Croatian journalist was filed, then Tom Cruise (aka Tom Cruise's People) took up the trend in response to rumours that crowds who greeted the Mission Impossible star's arrival in Mumbai were hired actors.

It became both rather well. "It's par for the course," said Jolie of Josip Knežević's claim that she had taken her story from his book, The Soul Shattering. "It happens on almost every film. There are many books and documentaries that I did pull from, but that particular book I've never seen." Jolie's film, In The Land of Blood and Honey, is set during the Bosnian war and sees a Serbian camp commander »

Shane Meadows Returns With This Is England 88 On December 13th

30 November 2011 2:55 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Acclaimed British director Shane Meadows (Dead Man’s Shoes, A Room for Romeo Brass) is set to follow up his critically acclaimed Channel 4 miniseries This is England 1986 with a 1988 based miniseries airing over three nights in December. We were originally introduced to the characters, Shaun, Woody and Lol in Shane’s 2006 film This is England which was set in 1983. The original film showed the bleak reality of life in Thatcher’s England following the Falklands War and focused on a group of teenagers coming of age alongside the rise of Skinheads and mass unemployment.

The first miniseries, This is England ‘86 which aired in September 2010 on Channel 4 focused on the mod revival scene rather than the skinhead scene and was set three years after the film in 1986, during the World Cup. It dealt with similar themes as the film but also expanded to cover sexual abuse and the recession. »

These supercool kids can change sex and divide in two but are still totally convincing

The weird dude who hands out the superpowers to the community service kids in Misfits (E4, Sunday) is having to be quite imaginative, given that this is now the start of series three, and they require new powers. So Kelly becomes a rocket scientist. That's not a superpower, is it? More of a profession, albeit quite an impressive one. Curtis gets a better one; he can now change into a girl. Yeah, that works, I think. In my poll of a few boys, most (all) would take it. And it's all about sex, I'm afraid; they want to know what it feels like, for a girl. I asked some girls too, if they'd like to be able to temporarily change into one of us. Again, quite a positive response, but for different reasons – they mainly »

The E4 Misfits return...

They're back! Misfits returns for Series 3 on Sunday 30 October at 10pm on E4.

Check out the new guy Rudy played by Joseph Gilgun. He lines up alongside Misfits resident delinquents Bafta award winner Lauren Socha, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Antonia Thomas and Iwan Rheon in the super-sized series which sees its run extended to eight episodes.

New kid on the block Rudy gets a rude awakening in his first few days of community service, learning that with the keys to the infamous locker room comes a great deal of running and screaming and, in some instances, killing. But that really is the least of his worries. More pressing is just how to keep his secret superpower...well...secret. And just how super is it? As in is it one from the A- List?

The rest of the gang are also back with their all-new powers. So just how did that trade-off with »
