The Vampire Diaries Ep. 3.16, “1912”: Underplotted filler ep saved by closing reveal

The Vampire Diaries Review, Season 3, Episode 16: “1912”

Written by Julie Plec and Elisabeth R. Finch

Directed by John Behring

Airs Thursdays at 8pm (Et) on the CW

This week, on The Vampire Diaries: It’s brotherly tough love for Stefan, Rebecca does some tree-related sleuthing, and Elena has a heart-to-heart with Matt.

After several weeks of reruns, and with a not-insubstantial cliffhanger to resolve, The Vampire Diaries is back this week with a flashback-laden lorefest heavy on the brotherly angst. Usually this is just the kind of story the series excels at. Flashbacks to Stefan and Damon’s human life have been reliably entertaining in the past and last season’s jaunt to ‘20s Chicago was a hoot. This time, however, the story falls flat, with little development and not nearly enough action to warrant the time dedicated to 1912 Mystic Falls.

During these flashbacks, we’re introduced to Sage,

The Vampire Diaries: The Mystery Killer is Revealed! What Do You Think? (Poll)

The Vampire Diaries: The Mystery Killer is Revealed! What Do You Think? (Poll)

The Vampire Diaries threw us for a loop in this week's episode.  After setting up a mysterious serial killer over several episodes, the show finally revealed the stab-happy murderer....

Seriously, do not read any further if you haven't seen the episode, because major spoilers follow.

The killer turned out to be none other than mild-mannered high school turned vampire hunter Alaric Saltzman!  Holy crap, we did not see that one coming!

Flashing back to 1912, when a rash of Mystic Falls founders were also being murdered, the Salvatore brothers soon realized that a descendent of Jonathan Gilbert was to blame.   Only Damon was confused, because he was certain he had killed the woman in question.  But, as it turns out, she was also in possession of the Gilbert family "bring-back-to-life" ring (probably not the official name, but

'The Vampire Diaries' recap: Ordinary parents to an extraordinary child

There was only one part of this week's episode of "The Vampire Diaries" that I was looking forward to, and that was the scene where Damon tells Stefan about his werewolf bite. Those two are at their best when they're together.

As for the rest of the episode... I was completely dreading it. First of all, we've been warned left and right about how sad it would be, and sad things generally do not make me happy, for they are sad. Additionally, I figured that the actual sacrifice couldn't possibly live up the the hype.

I'm happy to say that I was wrong on both counts. Let's jump in, shall we?

Previously on "The Vampire Diaries": Elijah talked so much.

8:01 - Matt! In the first scene of the episode! Unfortunately, it's hard to get excited about his presence when he just shot Tyler. Why is Matt so comfortable with a gun?

The Vampire Diaries "The Sun Also Rises": The Good, The Bad, and The Bloody

We're just one week away from the season finale of The Vampire Diaries, and this next-to-last episode has almost as much drama as I expect next week will have. Klaus's sacrifice to break his curse finally takes place - but the conclusion isn't exactly what I thought was going to happen. There's also a major death, along with a few minor ones and several near misses. All in all, it's a pretty violent installment, and I'm ready to talk about what happened. To discuss the good, the bad, and the bloody of the episode, just read more. The Good Let me just say how happy I am to see Tyler and Caroline re-igniting their bond. After Matt shoots Tyler in werewolf form, he and Caroline flee to the Lockwood house. Matt admits that he was never compelled to forget that Caroline was a vampire and has been spying on her for her mother.

Also, poor Elena is spotted in a dangerous "circle of fire" as Klaus is trying to sacrifice her. The Vampire Diaries 2.16 "The House Guest" Recap

I've officially run out of words to open a recap for The Vampire Diaries unless I start using expletives, which I unfortunately can't use describe the awesomeness that was last night's episode. In fact, I'm mentally circling how I'm going to be able to tackle the layers of goodness that was bestowed upon us tonight, especially given this episode marks the last one till April (cue the screams of torture now). With that said, I'm going to take on this recap the best way possible and try my damnedest to not leave anything out, without going overboard.

Elena and Stefan get duped by Katherine, who they just found out was released from the tomb due to Elijah's 'death.' It's unclear if Damon told Stefan beforehand of Katherine's escape, but the fact of the matter is that Elena is pissed and doesn't want any help that Katherine has to offer.

Recap - 'The Vampire Diaries': 'The Dinner Party'

Recap - 'The Vampire Diaries': 'The Dinner Party'
The episode opens with Elena reading Jonathan Gilbert's journals at the lake house. She discovers that he thought all the vampires were dead but, at a dinner party, heard noises. When he went out to investigate, he used his compass and was shocked to discover that he was surrounded by vampires. He writes that his friends were suddenly attacked by a vampire. "I saw the vampire who killed me," Elena reads. "I recognised him. It was Stefan Salvatore." Stefan is standing by the lake when Damon calls, revealing that Tyler has run away so they can now focus on Elijah. He adds that he has the dagger and is planning to kill Elijah soon, but promises that he will be careful. Stefan goes inside and admits that he is still angry with Elena for agreeing to sacrifice herself to Klaus. Elena retorts that she is reading about things Stefan

The Vampire Diaries "The Dinner Party": The Good, the Bad, and the Bloody

  • BuzzSugar
It's flashbacks and fancy parties on this week's episode of The Vampire Diaries. We travel back into Stefan's personal history and learn what he was like (read: very, very bad) before he became the "good" vampire he is today. In Mystic Falls, there's still no sign of Klaus, but the other Original baddie Elijah is invited to a very special dinner hosted by Damon, while Bonnie and Jeremy show up for a brief, devastating moment. What seems like a pretty calm episode actually has plenty of surprising moments, so if you're ready to recap all the good, bad, and bloody of this week, then read more. The Good Still on their weekend trip at the lake, Elena reads from Jonathan Gilbert's journal and discovers that Stefan killed members of her family. Stefan explains to Elena that he and Damon were angry at the founding families for what they had done to Katherine,

Recap: 'The Vampire Diaries' - 'The Dinner Party'
So, it’s Elijah killing season! Or at least, that’s what Damon is hoping. He’s got his dagger, he’s got his Elijah hunting license, he’s got a few pints of Andie’s blood in his system, he’s ready to go. But will that wascally dagger do the trick? The Vampire Diaries 2.14 "Crying Wolf" Recap

After watching tonight's episode of The Vampire Diaries, I know what side of the supernatural turf I want to belong to. Too bad Tyler wasn't so clear on his own choices.

Act 1 - A Weekend Getaway, Vengeful Plans

The morning after the wolf slaughter from last week, Jules and Brady learn from another wolf, Stevie, about the Sun & Moon curse and Mason's involvement in it with some vampire named 'Kathy'. Brady declares to kill every vamp in town to stop them from breaking the curse.

At Caroline's house, Stefan calls Elena and the two decide to escape to a cabin in the woods for the weekend, which would be a way for Elena to leave the drama behind, namely John.

Damon walks Andie out the house, but gets some interesting info involving a new writer in town who is none other than Elijah. Alaric stops by afterwards and the two

The Vampire Diaries "Crying Wolf": The Good, the Bad, and the Bloody

  • BuzzSugar
I was hoping for some Valentine's Day action on The Vampire Diaries this week, but unfortunately, a romantic trip for Elena and Stefan goes awry when the pack of trouble-making werewolves comes calling. There's still a little sweetness for some characters though - we witness a kiss from a prospective couple that we've been waiting for! Original vampire Elijah surfaces in Mystic Falls to herald the coming showdown with Klaus, but most of the action is still werewolf-on-vampire this week. Are you ready to dissect the good, the bad, and the bloody? Get down to it when you read more. The Good The werewolves are freaking out once they put together the pieces that Mason was assisting "that hot vampire chick Kathy" to break the sun and the moon curse. If they're the ones to break it, werewolves can turn at will - including never again, if they want. Once Tyler identifies "Kathy" as Elena,

'The Vampire Diaries': Paul Wesley reveals Stefan's 'lustful' side

Damon doesn't get to have all the fun around here.

Zap2it caught up with "The Vampire Diaries" star Paul Wesley at a recent promotional shoot in Los Angeles, and before he had to hop on a plane back to Atlanta for production, he filled us in on a whole new side of Stefan.

In an upcoming episode, we'll flash back to 1864 again -- but this time, we'll see just how Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan first adjusted to their new vampire instincts after they turned.

"I'm so excited," Wesley tells us, his eyes lighting up. "We have a flashback, and Stefan is very Damon-esque. He's lost; he doesn't know what to do with himself. He's living in guilt, so he's just sinful, and lustful, and very Damon-like -- times ten. It's kind of fantastic."

In the present, Stefan has found a temporary fix for his blood addiction, as Elena

Vampire Diaries Review - "Stefan's Diaries #1: Origins"

In light of the most recent Vampire Diaries episode, which showed us glimpses into Katherine’s past, I thought it was the opportune time to review the newest Vampire Diaries book “Stefan’s Diaries #1: Origins”. This book, based on the characters by L.J. Smith, and with input from showrunners Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, tells the story of how Stefan became a vampire.

TV show tie-ins can often be hit or miss, especially if they don’t stay true to cannon or the spirit of the characters. However, “Origins” manages to do both. We’ve seen bits and pieces of Stefan’s birth as a vampire throughout various flashbacks on the show, but this new book really fills in the blanks. A lot of familiar characters also appear throughout its pages, including Damon, Katherine, Jonathan Gilbert, Stefan’s father and vampires Pearl and Anna. A bit of the history

The Vampire Diaries "Founder's Day": The Good, The Bad and The Bloody

I can barely express my grief that The Vampire Diaries is over for the season - but what an insane season finale! Also causing me grief? The three, and possibly more, deaths that we witness on Founder's Day! Yes, that death I mentioned earlier this week turned out to be deaths - plural - but those events aren't even the most shocking or awesome parts of the final episode of season one. To rehash the good, the bad, and the bloody, just read more. The Good Damon Salvatore: not so inhuman after all! First, he thanks Bonnie for taking the curse off the device (or at least pretending to), and when Jeremy is unusually hostile to Elena over what happened with Vicki, Damon intercedes to stick up for Elena. He has me convinced he's the "better, hotter, superior choice." We see two plans being developed: the tomb vampires plotting an
