'Fly to the woods!'

28 December 2008 5:07 PM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

Those were the words shouted by Emmy's best-actor champ Paul Giamatti in best miniseries of 2008, "John Adams," as British troops approached the home of Abigail Adams and family. No authorities chase me nowadays (my randy years in college were another matter), but I still fly to the woods when the awards derby slows down a bit during the holidays. After spending Christmas with my dad, brother, sister and two nephews in Ohio last week, I scooted off to my cabin up in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains. There's snowy quiet everywhere — ah, bliss — and, in the mornings, an eerie mist hugs the trees. Very odd. Fog doesn't usually climb up this high. Or are »

Sundance 09: Paul Giamatti explores soul extraction in Cold Souls

28 December 2008 12:49 PM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

While not a fan of Giamatti (specifically because films seem to be tailored to him), he is the starrer behind Sophie Barthes directorial debut Cold Souls. The story revolves around Giamatti, who as an actor, decides to explore soul extraction during an existential crisis as a relief from the burdens of daily life. Sounds interesting? Yup, and the stills look even better. Once again I have to say I'm wary when major known actors get play at fests like Sundance, but given the subject matter and pictures it might just be worth it.

First Look: Paul Giamatti in Sophie Barthes' Cold Souls

26 December 2008 9:16 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Considering it's a quiet Christmas weekend and also that the Sundance Film Festival is only 20 days away, we've got yet another Sundance related debut this morning. We were sent the first batch of photos from Cold Souls, a dark comedy starring Paul Giamatti that will be premiering at Sundance. In the film, Giamatti (ironically) plays himself, an actor that during an existential crisis decides to explore "soul extraction" as a relief from the burdens of daily life. I thought the concept for this already sounded great, but looking at these photos I'm now convinced to make sure I catch this as soon as possible. Sundance programmer Caroline Libresco says of Cold Souls: "Sophie Barthes’s debut feature is strikingly original, not only for its haunting concept but for its poetic execution. Inspired production design and lyrical cinematography create a melancholic, heightened world. Perfectly cast, Giamatti and a gifted ensemble »

List of the 2009 Screen Actors Guild Award Nominees

18 December 2008 8:39 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Nominations for the 15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced this morning all while the Guild members are split on whether to move forward with a strike or not... There are certainly a few surprises to be mentioned such as how it looks like Revolutionary Road should start expecting little more than a Kate Winslet nomination as Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael Shannon and the film itself are not mentioned. Melissa Leo swoops into the Best Actress category and Kristin Scott Thomas swoops out. Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) takes the Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) nomination and Robert Downey Jr. also gets in on the action for Tropic Thunder. Will the Academy be as open to Downey's comedic role? Many are talking about Doubt coming out of these nominations, but it really should come as No surprise whatsoever since the top award is based on an ensemble acting piece and in those »

Golden Globes Noms

12 December 2008 1:14 PM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Doubt, Frost/Nixon and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button were the top movies at the announcement of this year's Golden Globe nominations, each receiving five nods apiece.

Surprisingly, though, only two of those films -- Frost/Nixon and Benjamin Button -- were up for the Best Picture - Drama award, as Doubt was shut out of the category in favor of The Reader, Revolutionary Road, and Slumdog Millionaire, each of which nabbed four nominations. Doubt, however, received the most acting nominations of any film, as all four of its primary stars -- Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis -- were recognized; the drama's fifth nomination was for Best Screenplay. Frost/Nixon and Benjamin Button received nominations in the exact same five categories: Best Picture - Drama, Best Actor (Frank Langella and Brad Pitt, respectively), Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Score.

Paul Giamatti and Anthony Mackie will star in Babylon, an indie movie due to start shooting in February in Jamaica. And frankly, if we were Paul Giamatti or Anthony Mackie, and had the chance to spend February in Jamaica, we probably would too.Babylon sees Giamatti play a British minister who, along with Mackie's Rastafarian from the remote hills of Jamaica, has to accompany a 12 year-old boy from the Kingston ghetto as they try to escape from pursuing gangsters. Bet they wish they'd stayed on the resort now, eh?Colombia's Andrés Baiz is directing the film, from a script by veteran assistant director (everything from Eyes Wide Shut to Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) and debutant screenwriter Ian Stone. While you're waiting for this one, you can see Giamatti opposite Clive Owen and Julia Roberts in Duplicity and Mackie playing Tupac in Notorious. »

Paul Giamatti Takes Worst Jamaican Vacation Ever

11 December 2008 9:35 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Paul Giamatti, action star? He's already got a role in the upcoming spy thriller Duplicity, and was featured in last year's self-explanatory Shoot 'Em Up, and now he's going to be running from gangsters in Jamaica, of all places, in Babylon. Variety is reporting that he and Anthony Mackie (playing Tupac Shakur in the upcoming Notorious) will star in the indie project, directed by Andres Baiz. Mackie will play a Rasta from rural Jamaica who, through some plot contrivance, winds up in the company of British official (Giamatti) and a 12-year-old boy. All three of them wind up on the run from gangsters in the ghettoes of Kingston. It'll be nice to spend some time with Giamatti, who has been laying low in some pretty bad movies since that one-two punch of American Splendor and Sideways. Ok, there was John Adams on TV, but the movies miss you, Paul! Don't »
