Scarlett Johansson Oscar dress Scarlett Johansson at the Oscars Looking great in a long purple dress, Scarlett Johansson displays her tight-fitting costume and bare back at the 83rd Academy Awards held on Feb. 27 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Oscar 2011 co-host and Best Actor nominee James Franco (for Danny Boyle's 127 Hours) thus introduced Johansson and fellow Oscar presenter Matthew McConaughey: "I am six degrees of Kevin Bacon away from our next two presenters. Figure it out on the Internet." Well, if you're lucky. Some have remarked that Franco was a more effective Oscar host online, where he tweeted some of the evening's to-dos, than on the stage of the Kodak Theatre. Anvil! The Story of Anvil

Directed by Sacha Gervasi

Whether you’re a heavy metal fan or not, you’ll appreciate Sacha Gervasi’s documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil as it lays out the surprisingly inspiring story of the Canadian 80s metal band whose star failed to rise, and how even after 30 years of disappointment, the two fearless friends who started it all maintain their never-say-die attitude.

The movie careens into action with flashback footage of a 1984 Japanese metal fest featuring Anvil alongside bands like Scorpions, Whitesnake and Bon Jovi. Anvil’s lead singer Lips dressed in bondage gear, slides a dildo across the strings of his guitar while taunting the thrashing crowd with his playful smile. Testimonials from members of some of metal’s biggest bands like Metallica, Motorhead and Slayer describe Anvil as the “real deal” and yet no one really understands why the band, in all their torn mesh, »

The Top 25 Oscar Documentary Snubs of the Past 30 Years

By Anjelica Oswald

Managing Editor

After narrowing the Oscar documentary feature shortlist to five at the 87th Academy Award nominations Jan. 15, a number of notable exclusions were featured, particularly Al Hicks‘ Keep on Keepin’ On, which documents the mentorship and friendship of a jazz legend and a blind piano prodigy, and Steve James‘ Life Itself, about the life and career of famed film critic Roger Ebert. (James is no stranger to snubs and the exclusion of his 1994 film Hoop Dreams led to rule reform within the documentary category.)  Both films hold 97 percent positive ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.

Some films surprised when they didn’t even land a spot on the shortlist, such as Red Army, which examines the rise and fall of the Soviet Union’s hockey team from the perspective of its coach. That film holds a 100 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Week in Review: Neil deGrasse Tyson’s ‘Star Talk’ podcast coming to late night TV

Larry Wilmore may not be the only African American host in late night television. Neil deGrasse Tyson, noted astrophysicist and the Internet’s favorite person ever behind Benedict Cumberbatch and Patrick Stewart, is reportedly moving his hit podcast Star Talk to the National Geographic Channel, Deadline reports.

The show is inspired by NPR’s Car Talk and features Tyson speaking with celebrities about everything from science to pop culture to comedy. “It will be National Geographic’s very first talk show so we look forward to how this plays out,” Tyson said to a group of journalists at the Winter TV Press Tour 2015.

Tyson previously hosted Fox’s remake of the documentary series Cosmos, and we previously reported that he has an awful lot of thoughts about Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. He recently also attracted some unwanted attention from religious types after tweeting that Isaac Newton shared a birthday with Jesus Christ. »
