Bryan Cranston and Graham Yost have done a masterful job of steering the cast to fantastic performances,” said Joe Lewis, Amazon Studios’ head of comedy and drama. “Both the critical response and our customers’ engagement with the series are key factors in our enthusiasm to bring our audience a second season of ‘Sneaky Pete.’”

Sneaky Pete Review

Giovanni Ribisi has been around longer than most people probably realize, and he has had some great roles throughout his career, but in Sneaky Pete, he’s finally found something that gives him the chance to show off just how good he really is.

Leave it to Bryan Cranston to come up with a series (that is really just a 10-hour movie) that gives its actors so much room to pull life from the shadows. The show isn’t just a kind of homage to con/caper films, but to a theory of character study that is largely abandoned today, one that knows you have to study all the characters to pull apart the main one. That’s an idea that is hard to relay without it sounding as though the show is rather stuffy and boring, but Sneaky Pete is anything. It isn’t just wildly fun, it’s

‘Sneaky Pete’ Review: Bryan Cranston Creates a Charming Con Story for Amazon (and Makes a Great Big Bad)

‘Sneaky Pete’ Review: Bryan Cranston Creates a Charming Con Story for Amazon (and Makes a Great Big Bad)
“The devil’s in the details” is a phrase one would expect to to hear in a con story. Twisty, fun thrillers like these thrive on little moments that may have been overlooked — swiping a wallet after an “accidental” collision, sliding an extra card into the deck to throw the count — but they typically do so by flashing back and highlighting an action that wasn’t seen at first glance. It makes the audience admire how clever and smooth the con artist is, with the surprise benefit of giving the viewers at home a wake-up call.

Such scenes populate “Sneaky Pete,” Amazon’s new original series starring Giovanni Ribisi as the titular con artist, but they aren’t the details that elevate the charming drama above similar fodder. Creators Bryan Cranston (who co-stars as Ribisi’s primary intellectual opponent) and David Shore not only populate the series with expert character

‘Sneaky Pete’: Bryan Cranston Tackles New Challenges With Amazon Drama Series

‘Sneaky Pete’: Bryan Cranston Tackles New Challenges With Amazon Drama Series
Bryan Cranston was moving around the set like a lion on the prowl.

On a soundstage in Brooklyn on a late September morning, he was in his element, working on a tense, confrontational scene with actors he had handpicked for the drama series “Sneaky Pete,” which drops Jan. 13 on Amazon. With each take, Cranston changed his approach to the showdown among unsavory characters in the backroom of a seedy gambling joint in New York City. He added and subtracted menacing physical gestures, throaty snorts, and nervous laughter. He switched the path of his pacing around a large table. He massaged his monologue, adding pauses and changing the inflection of key words from a guttural whisper to an angry bark.

As he experimented through at least eight lengthy takes that morning, he held the rapt attention of everyone on the set. Actors who weren’t even in the scene gathered around the periphery to catch a master class
