Ves Awards are dominated by “The Jungle Book”

Last night, the Visual Effects Society handed out their awards at their annual gathering. It was mainly a good night for The Jungle Book, which took the top prize, known as Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature. It beat back Doctor Strange, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, while at the Academy Awards, it’ll be up against Deepwater Horizon, Doctor Strange, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It was an expected win, but one that was eagerly awaited to try and figure out the Oscar category of Best Visual Effects. Ves Awards: ‘The Jungle Book’ and ‘Kubo and the Two Strings’ Win Top VFX Prizes
The Jungle Book” is on its way to VFX Oscar gold after getting five Ves nods Tuesday night at the Beverly Hilton. “Rogue One,” the “Star Wars” standalone, however, came away empty-handed after receiving seven nominations.

Innovative Disney hybrid “The Jungle Book” won for outstanding feature, King Louie’s animated performance, virtual cinematography, effects simulations, and compositing.

Laika’s Oscar-nominated “Kubo and the Two Strings” earned VFX animation props, “Deepwater Horizon” took supporting VFX and model work for Industrial Light & Magic, and “Game of Thrones: Battle of the Bastards” continued its TV dominance.

Disney’s “Moana” grabbed two animation awards (created environment and simulations), Pixar won for Hank’s animated performance, and Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” won for its New York City environment

See The Restoration of Star Trek's Original Starship Enterprise in New Video

Not long ago, Mick shared a video showing off the restored version of Star Trek's original U.S.S. Enterprise that's currently on display at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. Now William George has created a short film called Spacedock that gives us a detailed look into the restoration process. The artists who worked on this are clearly just as passionate about the intricacies of the ship as any diehard Trek fan, and it's cool to see all the work that went into bringing the ship back to its former glory.

This is a short film showing the process of the detail paint work on the conservation of the original U.S.S. Enterprise miniature, used in all 79 episodes of the original Star Trek television series. The detail paint work was done between the 11th and the 23rd of April 2016 at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F.

The Visual Effects society has released this years nominations for the annual Ves Awards. The awards were put in place in order to credit outstanding achievements within the fields of animation, television, film and video games. The Best Visual Effects is often the place where the Academy recognizes what it is frequently accused of avoiding elsewhere: mainstream spectacle. Blockbusters reign in this category, at least at the nomination stage, with fantasy films, franchises and other money-makers always featuring prominently. The branch also has its specific fetishes, at least historically (talking animals immediately jumps to mind), though, in recent years, it has seemingly been all 3D, all the time. There are dozens if not hundreds of individuals who work on a film’s visual effects but the nomination can ultimately be shared by only four of them – usually the special effects supervisor and three visual effects supervisors. While some names are "favorites" of the branch (John Frazier, Joe Letteri), this branch is hardly the most insular and tends to be more concerned about the work on display. Lee Settles With Couple After Twitter Address Blunder
Spike Lee has agreed to give compensation to an elderly Florida couple whose address he published on the internet in connection with the death of teenager Trayvon Martin.

The He Got Game director thought he was retweeting the address of neighbourhood watch volunteer, George Zimmerman, who shot Martin dead in a Florida gated community on 26 February, sparking outrage and protests across the U.S.

However, the address he posted to his Twitter.com page was actually the home of Elaine and David McClain, who have a son named William George Zimmerman - no relation to the Zimmerman involved in the shooting case. They had to flee their home after their address was published.

Lee publicly apologised for the blunder, and the couple's attorney, Matt Morgan, has now revealed the moviemaker has offered them compensation.

Morgan says, "At this point in time, we have come to an agreement with Spike Lee and his attorneys, and at this point, the matter is fully resolved. Spike has agreed to compensate the McClains for their loss and for the disruption into their lives. He's taken full responsibility."

Elaine McClain also revealed the director apologised to them during a phone call, adding, "He was really kind. And when he called us, you could just tell he really felt bad about it. And it was just a slip, and I just know that he really, really has been concerned."

Sanford, Fla. -- An elderly couple has reached a settlement with Spike Lee after the pair said they had to leave their Florida home after the director help spread a Twitter posting listing their address as that of the man who shot an unarmed teen.

The couple's attorney, Matt Morgan, announced the settlement Thursday. Morgan says Lee called them to apologize for retweeting their address. Specifics of the settlement weren't disclosed.

Elaine and David McClain are in their 70s and say they have a son named William George Zimmerman, who lived in their Sanford area home in the mid-1990s. They say he is no relation to 28-year-old George Zimmerman, who killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26.

The killing has touched off widespread protests around the country and expressions of outrage – including from Lee and other celebrities – because Zimmerman was not arrested. The neighborhood watch volunteer has said he acted in self-defense.
