From ‘Star Wars’ to ‘Game of Thrones,’ Film and TV Music in a Live Setting Is Thriving

From ‘Star Wars’ to ‘Game of Thrones,’ Film and TV Music in a Live Setting Is Thriving
Just a few years ago, “film music in concert” translated to short suites by big-name movie composers (Henry Mancini, John Williams) performed at summer pops concerts. Today, established American orchestras that once didn’t look at the merging of screen and music seriously, take heed of live-to-picture performances as very big business, with concert halls packing in audiences around the world.

That’s something of a surprise, considering how most classical musicians had traditionally looked down their collective noses at movie music. “Film music was a pejorative, and that was the end of it,” David Newman says. Now they see the attendance figures, and attitudes have changed considerably.

Indeed, just a month ago, the New York Philharmonic completed a three-week, four-film “Star Wars” series with Newman conducting John Williams’ scores for the original trilogy plus “The Force Awakens” to sold-out crowds at New York’s David Geffen Hall. “The orchestra absolutely killed it,” says Newman.

Hollywood’s Underage Sexual Abuse Problem: 5 Shocking Injustices From ‘An Open Secret’

Hollywood’s Underage Sexual Abuse Problem: 5 Shocking Injustices From ‘An Open Secret’
An Open Secret” sounds like the perfect title for a brand-new documentary addressing the entertainment industry’s sexual harassment and assault epidemic, which in recent weeks has uncoupled Harvey Weinstein, Roy Price, and Andy Signore from their companies (and caused James Toback, President George H.W. Bush, Oliver Stone, Ben Affleck, and Mark Halperin to confront their own allegations). However, the documentary — which focuses on the abuse male managers, agents, and publicists inflict on young, male clients — premiered at Doc NYC in November 2014 and had a small release the following June (IndieWire awarded it an A-).

Despite its current 93 percent Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, director Amy Berg — who’d previously investigated sexual abuse in “Prophet’s Prey” and “Deliver Us from Evil,” for which she earned a 2007 Best Feature Documentary Oscar nomination — was unable to find a distributor. “An Open Secret” producer Gabe Hoffman claims the film was even accepted,

Academy Museum Gets Funding From Netflix, Charles Roven, Bloomberg Philanthropies

Academy Museum Gets Funding From Netflix, Charles Roven, Bloomberg Philanthropies
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has received contributions from Netflix, Bloomberg Philanthropies, producer Charles Roven, and Tom Spiegel — bringing the delayed project to nearly 80% of its $388 million funding goal.

The museum project has been beset by cost overruns and remains more than $78 million shy of its revised budget. The Academy Museum was originally slated to open this year; it’s now set to open its doors sometime in 2019.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences didn’t disclose the amounts of the new donations, but the total was less than $23 million. Last month, Haim and Cheryl Saban gave $50 million to the Academy Museum, the biggest contribution to date. With the gift, the Academy renamed the May Company building, which will house the main part of the museum, the Saban Building.

The museum, at the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, is designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano. It will feature

Atd To Host Hope Rising Benefit Tonight

On Thursday, October 12, Aftd (the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration) will hold its Hope Rising Benefit at the Pierre Hotel in NYC, co-hosted by Benefit Co-Chairs Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., David Geffen, Donald Newhouse and Anna Wintour.

At the dinner, Aftd will present U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer with the Susan Newhouse & Si Newhouse Award of Hope to recognize his decades-long work in support of biomedical research.

The event will feature musical performances from Tony and Grammy award winner Cynthia Erivo and will be hosted by Paula Zahn. Aftd works to spread awareness and raise funds for research into Ftd (frontotemporal degeneration), a debilitating form of dementia that is most common in people under 60. Ftd causes progressive, irreversible changes to personality, behavior, language and movement — and today there is no cure. This evening’s gala is part of Aftd’s mission to address Ftd disorders.

Et Obsessions: ‘Blade Runner 2049,’ Cardi B, 'The Good Place' and More!

Et Obsessions: ‘Blade Runner 2049,’ Cardi B, 'The Good Place' and More!
Here at Et, we’re obsessed with a lot of things -- and this is what we’re most excited about this week:

Why We’re Obsessed With Cardi B

The odds of relative newcomer Cardi B dethroning Taylor Swift’s pop juggernaut, “Look What You Made Me Do,” from the top of the Billboard Hot 100 seemed stacked against her. And yet, as fate would have it, the New York rapper’s infectious debut single, “Bodak Yellow,” has finally landed at No. 1, making the 24-year-old the first solo female hip-hop artist to top the chart since Lauryn Hill in 1998 with “Doo Wop (That Thing).” Her quick ascent is especially impressive considering Cardi has never had a chart presence before “Bodak Yellow.” Now, all eyes are on the former Love & Hip Hop: New York star as fellow artists, including Swift herself, Nicki Minaj and Missy Elliott, have all shown support. But more than anything, it’s hard

Academy Museum Gets Major Boost With $50 Million Gift From Haim Saban

Haim and Cheryl Saban will donate $50 million to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, the largest contribution the project has received to date.

The Academy has struggled to raise funds while the cost of the project has ballooned in recent years. The Saban contribution brings the fundraising total to $288 million — still $100 million shy of the project’s $388 million budget.

The Academy announced that the 1939 May Company building, the five-story structure that will house the museum’s exhibits, will be renamed the Saban Building.

This is the first contribution announced since the departure of chief fundraiser Bill Kramer nearly two years ago. The Academy hired Katharine DeShaw to take Kramer’s position in 2016.

The Academy also announced the formation of a new board to oversee the project, which will be chaired by Universal vice chairman Ron Meyer.

“We could not be happier with the momentum the museum is experiencing on all fronts,” Kerry Brougher,
