Film Review: ‘The Hundred-Foot Journey’

25 July 2014 5:12 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Beef bourguignon or tandoori goat? Career success or family loyalty? You can actually have it all, according to “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” a culture-clash dramedy that presents itself as the most soothing brand of cinematic comfort food. As such, this genteel, overlong adaptation of Richard C. Morais’ 2010 novel about two rival restaurants operating in a sleepy French village is not without its pleasures — a high-energy score by A.R. Rahman, exquisite gastro-porn shot by Linus Sandgren, the winningly barbed chemistry of Helen Mirren and Om Puri — all prepared to exacting middlebrow specifications and ensured to go down as tastily and tastefully as possible. With the formidable backing of producers Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey, the DreamWorks concoction should cater to a broad array of arthouse appetites, particularly among those viewers who embraced the similar East-meets-West fusion cuisine of “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.”

Exclusive 'Rosemary's Baby' image finds Zoe Saldana in stylish repose

29 April 2014 4:06 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

We're only two weeks from the birth of NBC's new take on "Rosemary's Baby" and, courtesy of NBC, HitFix has an exclusive picture of Zoe Saldana, who will be stepping into a modern version Mia Farrow's pixie cut for the Ira Levin adaptation. As you can see from the picture above -- a very nice NBC-provided image that is Not an exclusive -- the new "Rosemary's Baby" has been moved from New York City to Paris and the picture is presumably meant to make us sympathize with Patrick J. Adams' character, because we also would make some very dark pacts to get a Parisian flat with that unobstructed view of the Eiffel Tower. In addition to Adams and Saldana, "Rosemary's Baby" stars Jason Isaacs and Carole Bouquet.  The teleplay comes from Scott Abbott and James Wong, with "Europa, Europa" and "Treme" veteran Agnieszka Holland. "Rosemary's Baby" will air »

Berlin Film Review: ‘Beauty and the Beast’

18 February 2014 1:28 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

“I use antlers in all of my decorating,” sang Gaston, the lunkish villain of Disney’s 1991 “Beauty and the Beast,” in a self-titled ode to macho excess. He’d no doubt have approved of Christophe Gans’s garishly mounted, emotionally vacant and, yes, lavishly antler-strewn interpretation of the evergreen fairytale, though it’s hard to see many others being similarly satisfied. Borrowing piecemeal from manifold tellings of the 18th-century chestnut — from de Beaumont to Disney, via Cocteau —  but cut from the same CGI-enhanced cloth as 2012′s “Snow White and the Huntsman,” this busy update plays up the sword-swishing action while playing down the Gothic romance, with no clear audience in mind. With stars Lea Seydoux and Vincent Cassel given little to do but admire the scenery, the pic is nothing if not a robust showcase for the world-class work of European visual effects houses; whether it warrants a look in »
