Gareth Huw Evans' new film pits an elite Jakarta police unit against an entire towerblock of baddies. It's fast, violent and daring, like the best of the genre
If there's one word used to describe Asian cinema, it's usually "extreme". From South Korea we've had the hammer-wielding antics of Oldboy, whose star ate a live baby octopus, while from Japan we've had Takashi Miike's Ichi The Killer, in which a severed face hits a wall and slides down it – in one of the film's lighter moments. From Hong Kong comes pretty much anything with Jackie Chan in it, a martial artist who proudly boasts of having broken every bone in his 5ft 8" body. And now from Indonesia comes The Raid, an action extravaganza teeming with machete-twirling, gravity-defying psychos who slice, smash and crush anything that dares cross their path.

In a little over two weeks (on May 18, to be precise), The Raid makes its way into cinema screens across the U.K.
Written and directed by Welsh-born filmmaker Gareth Evans, and starring leading Silat expert turned actor Iko Uwais, The Raid is a hard-hitting action film like no other, brimming with no-holds-barred coercion and unfaltering intensity.
The film centers on a Swat team who, after being tasked with taking out Tama (Ray Sahetapy), a landlord and kingpin to the scum of Jakarta, enter the building complex to which he resides. Rising up floor by floor, the team must fight with their bare hands in order to complete their assignment and escape the labyrinthes deadly residents.
During his whistle-stop tour to our shores, HeyUGuys had the opportunity to chat to Evans about the initial inspiration, how his past experiences helped in the making of The Raid and if the overwhelming »

Welshman Gareth Evans is part of a new mood of creativity in Indonesian cinema, ready for global competition despite the country's lack of film infrastructure and political support

"He is very kind and very polite. We are known as a polite people. But Gareth Evans is more Indonesian than most Indonesian people." So says film-maker Joko Anwar, speaking of the current flagbearer for Bahasa cinema. Since he moved to Jakarta four years ago, Evans, a softly-spoken scion of the Brecon Beacons, has resurrected the Indo martial-arts film. His latest, a careening piece of John Woo-esque ultraviolence called The Raid, is winning the country some overdue global exposure, thanks to its Sony Pictures Classic deal. He chuckles when he hears Anwar's comment: "He would say that!" What does he mean? "Oh – it's a private joke. »

This has been a good week for rapper-singer-provocateur M.I.A.. The Sri Lankan-British artist is featured alongside Nicki Minaj in Madonna’s new Super Bowl-themed video “Give Me All Your Luvin’.” And she just dropped a video for her new video “Bad Girls.” “Bad Girls” was shot in Ouarzazate, Morocco, and was directed by Romain Gavras (who also shot her “Born Free” clip). Is the new video a comment on Saudi Arabia’s anti-female driving laws? Or is it just M.I.A. getting her gangsta on? »

M.I.A. is back! And she's going mainstream! Set to appear alongside Madonna and Nicki Minaj at the Super Bowl this weekend, that performance will certainly be one of the more bizarre to ever grace the already dodgy history of halftime shows, and in a perfectly calibrated marketing move, the former revolution chanting hip hop artist has dropped her new single "Bad Girls." It seems Maya Arulpragasam has given up on the political rhetoric that thrust her into the spotlight (her last mixtape was called Vicki Leekz...get it!?) and gone into party jam mode instead. It sells more records anyway. Directed by Romain Gavras -- the helmer behind the seamy "Our Day Will Come" as well as M.I.A.'s controversial ginger killing video "Born Free" -- is behind the camera for what is essentially lots of car stunts in a desert. Bangin'. And you won't believe it, but M.I.A. wears »
