Founder of the SWAT team and Chief of the Los Angeles Police department for longer than any other Chief in the history of the Los Angeles Police department. Daryl Gates was born on August 30, 1926 in California. He is considered one of the most influential leaders in LAPD history and was famous for his strong stance against drugs. Before becoming the chief of the LAPD in 1978 he was head of intelligence, and in the early 1960s the security/driver for the legendary Chief Parker.

During his chief period, Gates was responsible of the creation of the anti-gang unit C.R.A.S.H. ( Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums ).
Famous crime writer James Ellroy described Gates as a modern-day vampire in his novels "Blood on the Moon", "Because of the Night" and "Suicide Hill".
Was constantly attacked by several L.A. rappers through their lyrics.
Was forced to retire in the aftermath of the 1992 L.A. riots due to the Rodney King verdict.
Was the chauffeur of legendary LAPD chief William H.Parker during the sixties.
Was the founder of the first Special Weapons And Tactics unit.
Was the founder of the D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program.
From September 1949 until June 1992, he was a member of the Los Angeles Police Department. From 1978 to June 1992, he was Police Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department.
He studied at Pasadena City College and earned a Bachelor's Degree from University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
In 1943, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served aboard the destroyer, Ault, in the South China Sea.
He is survived by his two daughters, Kathy Gates Parricone and Debby Gates Ladesma; and son, Lowell Gates; and a brother, Steve Gates of Los Angeles, California. He is survived by grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
