If you're going to commit to a blasphemous stoner comedy mocking the New Testament prophesy of the coming Rapture, you'd better go all in. Because halfway isn't funny. And either way, you're going to Hell. At least in the eyes of some.
Thus, the failed deadpan comedy "Rapture-Palooza" pairs up a seriously unflappable Anna Kendrick and John Francis Daley as survivors on Earth, not taken by the Rapture, trying to fend off the amorous advances of the Anti-Christ played by Craig Robinson. And it isn't as funny as it sounds.
Sure, taking the Bible literally ("Did anyone think this Through?") in regard to the apocalypse can seem awfully silly in the age of computer-generated effects. The righteous are "sucked up into heaven" in a flash -- empty bowling shoes are all that's Left Behind ... in the bowling alley. Where's Kirk Cameron to explain all this?

Title: Rapture-Palooza Director: Paul Middleditch Starring: Craig Robinson, Anna Kendrick, John Francis Daley, Rob Corddry, Ana Gasteyer, John Michael Higgins, Rob Huebel, Thomas Lennon, Ken Jeong, Paul Scheer, Tyler Labine, Calum Worthy The idea of an Earth-bound fistfight between a foul-mouthed God and equally lewd Satan, complete with shots to the groin, sounds anarchic and wild. And certainly the participation of the roster of comedically gifted talents listed above inspires some level of buzzy expectation. But in a post-”South Park” world, lazy execution of a ribald, potentially controversial concept will not suffice — especially not when the apocalypse is being handled with much more wit, vim and verve just across the megaplex, in the form of [ Read More ]

In theaters this weekend is the end of the world comedy Rapture-Palooza, which finds two young lovers battling the Anti-Christ during the apocalypse. Rob Corddry plays a not-so-great father to John Francis Daley, whose fiance (Anna Kendrick) has been targeted by The Beast (Craig Robinson). It's a big heaping helping of crazy with a side order of absurd that is sure to please those looking for something completely different from the norm this unusually slow summer weekend. And hey, if you're just not motivated enough to roll off the lawn with your Southern Pink Lemonade, Rapture-Palooza is also available right now on VOD. To help celebrate one of our personal favorites of the year, we sent in world-renowned talk artist and movie professor Todd Gilchrist to chat with Rob about his participation in this comedy of horrors. Watch our exclusive interview, which reveals some of the unknown facts about the impending rapture and its aftermath. »

The latest in a string of audience-of-none, end-is-nigh indie dramedies, “Rapture-Palooza” strains to find comedy in the book of Revelation, tracking a contempo young couple besieged by CG locusts, rains of blood and a horny Beast obsessed with booty sex. More irrelevant than irreverent, the unworthy script from “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure’s” Chris Matheson might play to apocalyptically stoned college kids, but offers nothing in the way of broader social satire, suggesting the waste of a perfectly good Reckoning — not to mention the talents of a cast far funnier than the doom-and-gloom results suggest.
Pushing-30 teens Lindsey (Anna Kendrick) and Ben (John Francis Daley) are bowling when the Rapture strikes. The devout are whisked straight to heaven, while the rest are left to fend for themselves in a world more or less unchanged, if you can look past the meteor showers and zombie-like wraiths. The two dream »

Chicago – Craig Robinson has a movie coming out about the end of the world that co-stars friends and fellow comedians Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill, and others. It’s called “This is the End.” Craig Robinson has another movie coming out about the end of the world that co-stars fellow comedians, including Rob Corddry, Paul Scheer, John Francis Daley, and Ana Gasteyer. It’s called “Rapture-Palooza,” and it opens in some markets tomorrow, June 7, 2013, while also being available On Demand. He’s cornering a very specialized market. Based on the general sense that “Rapture-Palooza” is little more than an extended “SNL” sketch, he can keep it.
Written by Chris Matheson and directed by Paul Middleditch, “Rapture-Palooza” starts with a clever concept. The Rapture happens while Lindsey (Anna Kendrick) and Ben (John Francis Daley) happen to be out bowling. Over the credits, pants fall over bowling shoes and balls crash to the ground. »

Although he'll be playing himself as a hapless victim of the whole affair in next week's This is the End , this Friday sees the Peeples and "The Office" star playing the biggest bad himself, starring as "The Beast" in this Friday's Rapture-Palooza . Also starring Anna Kendrick, John Francis Daley, Rob Corddry, Ana Gasteyer, John Michael Higgins, Rob Huebel, Tom Lennon, Ken Jeong, Paul Scheer, Mike O.Connell, Adrianna Costa, Jesse Camacho, Calum Worthy and Tyler Labine, the Rapture-Palooza features a script by Chris Matheson and is directed by Paul Middleditch. Things are not looking good for Suburgatory which, despite a last minute renewal for a third season, has been forced to cut out two of the eight regulars in its cast, with the possibility of more to come. Alan Tudyk and Rex Lee have been with the series since the very beginning, which makes it even more painful to see them let go. In particular, I’ve always enjoyed Tudyk in whatever role he is in. His presence will most certainly be missed, as will Lee’s. But this is just the way the cookie crumbles in today’s entertainment climate. No series is safe, even when it gets renewed.
Tudyk and Lee’s options were not picked up for one simple reason: budget cuts. Deadline reported Suburgatory’s third season renewal came after a reduction in the licensing fee, which means that money needed to be made up elsewhere. »

After "Suburgatory" barely avoided the cancellation axe from ABC this season, the comedy will lose two series regulars -- Alan Tudyk and Rex Lee -- in Season 3.
Deadline reports that due to budget cuts that came with the renewal, the contracts for both actors were not extended. Tudyk played narcissistic dentist Noah Werner, who was best friends with George Altman (Jeremy Sisto), while Lee played Mr. Wolfe, the guidance counselor at the high school attended by Tessa Altman (Jane Levy).
"Suburgatory" has an unusually large ensemble cast for a comedy series, and Deadline hints more actors could be let go or reduced to recurring. Besides Sisto and Levy, remaining cast members include Cheryl Hines, Ana Gasteyer, Chris Parnell, Carly Chaikin and Allie Grant.
While Tudyk has played a significant role in several of the show's storylines, Lee's character was more a minor figure whose presence isn't likely to be missed by fans. »

"Suburgatory" will look very different when it returns for Season 3, with Deadline reporting that regulars Alan Tudyk and Rex Lee have not had their contracts renewed for next season. We hear that there is a possibility that the two could return as guest stars.
The comedy's renewal was reportedly a last-minute decision for ABC and came with a reduction in the license fee, which means the producers have to find ways to cut costs -- which, for an ensemble comedy, sadly means trimming the cast.
According to Deadline, there may be further cuts or demotions from regular to recurring status ahead; stars Jane Levy, Jeremy Sisto, Cheryl Hines, Carly Chaikin, Ana Gasteyer and Allie Grant are the show's remaining regulars.
Both actors have been with the comedy since the pilot, with Tudyk playing Noah Werner, the extravagant best friend of Sisto's character George, while Lee portrayed high school guidance counsellor Mr. »

Exclusive Updated: I hear ABC‘s last-minute third-season renewal of Suburgatory as midseason replacement came with a reduction in the license fee, which is leading to budget cuts and some tough choices. I’ve learned that two of the series’ eight regulars, Alan Tudyk and Rex Lee, have not been picked up for next season. They may potentially appear as guest stars. I hear there may be further trims, with other regulars potentially being cut or reduced to recurring. Suburgatory‘s remaining regular cast includes stars Jane Levy and Jeremy Sisto as well as Cheryl Hines, Carly Chaikin, Ana Gasteyer and Allie Grant. Both Tudyk and Lee have been on the show since the beginning. Lee, who plays the high school’s guidance counselor, was a guest star in the pilot but was promoted to regular right after. Tudyk played Sisto’s trusted, country club-loving friend. Suburgatory was a breakout »

If you missed the red-band trailer for director Paul Middleditch's horror comedy Rapture-Palooza, you can check out the newly-released toned-down version here. There's only a little bit of new footage and it keeps the same jokes from the first trailer (minus the profanity), but star Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air) is certainly worth a second look, don't you think? She plays the object of affection sought after by the Anti-Christ (Craig Robinson) when the Rapture befalls Seattle. Her boyfriend (John Francis Daley) will do anything he can to stop her from becoming Satan's bride. Also starring Rob Corddry, Rob Huebel, Paul Scheer, Thomas Lennon, Ana Gasteyer, John Michael Higgins, Tyler Labine and Ken Jeong, Rapture-Palooza opens in theaters and on VOD June 7th.
