Greggory, Garrel and Julie Depardieu Star in Doillon's 'Aux Quatre Vents'

7 July 2009 | From ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news

- The majority of his films don't find U.S distribution (perhaps his films are simply too "French") but audiences might remember him as the helmer of Le petit criminel, Ponette and most recently, Raja. Just by reading the plot outline, I think busy bee director Jacques Doillon might find a taker for Aux Quatre Vents (To the Four Winds). Counting on a stellar cast, written by Doillon, the film centres on a playwright (Pascal Greggory) who invites some actors to his secluded house to prepare a play. But the combined presence of his ex-wife (Julie Depardieu) and her lover (Louis Garrel), as well as the playwright’s assistant and mistress (Agathe Bonitzer), makes this a particularly turbulent day, in which romantic and creative rivalries become entangled.
For some reason, I'm thinking of Ils se marièrent et eurent beaucoup d'enfants as I write this (probably because of the Birkin connection

Michele Placido, Jacques Rivette and Christophe Honoré headed to Venice?

2 July 2009 | From ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news

- Add Michele Placido’s Il Grande Sogno, Jacques Rivette’s 36 Vues du Pic Saint-Loup and Christophe Honoré’s Non Ma Fille, Tu N'iras Pas Danser to the list of possible titles that will compete at the Venice Film Festival. I speculated on plenty of titles what we should be seeing at the Lido in late August, and these three titles will surely be added to the usual cluster of Euro titles. Christophe Honoré’s Non Ma Fille, Tu N'iras Pas Danser (No, My Daughter, You Won’t Go Dancing) once again sees Louis Garrel make a contribution to an Honoré film -- but this time the ensemble pic sees Chiara Mastroianni showcased in the lead role. This would be the filmmaker's first time in Venice. Fellow French filmmaker Rivette would bring his France-Italian co-production to Venice with Italian actor Sergio Castellitto playing alongside Jane Birkin. Speaking of Italy, veteran

Point of No Return

26 May 2009 6:07 AM, PDT | From ifc.com | See recent IFC news

Philippe Garrel, now in his 60s, is semi-famous for being semi-obscure, even in France, though he remains one of the last stragglers to have fallen under the New Wave umbrella. (When he was 20, he trailed Godard, who in Jonathan Rosenbaum's phrase "virtually adopted him in May '68, when both were cruising the Latin Quarter student demonstrations with their cameras.") Here, Garrel had to wait until "Regular Lovers" (2005) for a film of his to find stateside distribution. But it's a small wonder: Garrel's career project is resolutely personal and self-examining, to a degree that makes Cassavetes and even Godard look like rangy entertainers. His approach is observational and so intimate you begin to sweat the bell jar effect of the locations. Garrel's life has been tumultuous -- including a decade spent with Nico, making impromptu experimental films and doing heroin, on and off Ibiza -- and it's his life that's onscreen,

What to Watch If Not Watching the "Watchmen"

2 March 2009 7:11 AM, PST | From ifc.com | See recent IFC news

Some homegrown interloping mixes with a strong international showing this week to give an overall balance to what's playing at your local multiplex. Comic book fans can salivate over "Watchmen," arthouse fans can enjoy a Louis Garrel double bill, and a Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse-inspired serial killer movie bridges the gap.

A best foreign language Oscar nominee from 2008, Russian director Nikita Mikhalkov's interpretation of the Reginald Rose's 1954 play "Twelve Angry Men" puts a contemporary political spin on this classic tale of passion and prejudice. Tasked with discerning the guilt of a young Chechen boy accused of brutally murdering his military officer father, Sergei Makovetsky plays the lone voice of dissent voting for acquittal. As the audience witnesses the boy's unfortunate childhood in flashbacks, Makovetsky's mysterious juror preaches rationality and reason as he attempts to convince a room
