Original 'Blair Witch' star Joshua Leonard: People still tell me they want their money back

16 September 2016 1:13 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

17 years ago, The Blair Witch Project burst into theaters on a massive wave of hype and made instant stars out of its directors, Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick, and its trio of lead actors: Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, who made the cover of Newsweek magazine that same August. It was an unprecedented success that paved the way for the "found footage" genre that would explode over the subsequent decade, with films like Paranormal Activity and Cloverfield successfully exploiting the format's potential. None of these, though, would haunt viewers in quite the same way as Blair Witch, whose grainy, pre-smartphone aesthetic and terrifying denouement would stick with us long after the film's pop-cultural moment had passed. Of the film's three lead actors, Leonard has undoubtedly enjoyed the greatest run of Hollywood success post-Blair Witch, though it's worth noting that his career didn't really begin to heat »

[Review] One More Time

7 April 2016 7:22 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

There’s a bothersome element to films about fictional musicians: the quality of the original songs, and the suspension of disbelief required – scratch that, demanded – to buy them as listenable. In the 2010 comedy Get Him to the Greek, it’s impossible to believe that Jonah Hill’s record company rep, a guy whose tastes run from iconic punk to Mars Volta, would ever jam to the hokey, generic drivel produced by Russell Brand’s fading rocker. Then there’s the notorious “Sugar High” finale in Empire Records, the Led Zeppelin knock-offs by the Almost Famous band Stillwater, and Ethan Hawke’s awful grunge snarling in Reality Bites. (Is it me, or was this sin disproportionately committed in the 1990s?)

Added to the roster is One More Time, a dramedy about a struggling New York singer/songwriter, Jude (née Starshadow) Lipman (Amber Heard), who decides to freeload at the estate of »

Title: One More Time Director: Robert Edwards Starring: Christopher WalkenAmber Heard, Kelli Garner, Hamish Linklater, Oliver Platt, Ann Magnuson. ‘One More Time’ gathers a terrific cast to stage the story of a musician’s incongruence betwixt his romantic repertoire and his tumultuous private affairs. A rather familiar tune that does not surprise or entertain. Jude (Amber Heard) is an aspiring rock star who is at crossroads in her life, with no clear path to take. She is relegated to recording commercial jingles and distracts herself with one night stands. When she is evicted from her Brooklyn apartment, she is forced to move into the Hamptons home of her wealthy and  [ Read More ]

Title: One More Time Director: Robert Edwards Starring: Christopher Walken, Amber Heard, Kelli Garner, Hamish Linklater, Ann Magnuson and Oliver Platt People who lead the most seemingly charmed and privileged lives, and have the potential to easily thrive on the endless opportunities that are conveniently presented to them, can often times lead the most troubling and unfulfilled lives. They can squander even the most appealing and favorable chance because they feel undeserving of love and success, after not receiving much emotional encouragement throughout their lives. That’s certainly the case with the professedly privileged young protagonist and her once successful father, who are both so eager to make their mark on  [ Read More ]

Academy Awards Film Series: Scorsese's Spielbergian Biopic Comes Crashing Down Each Time After Take-Off

19 March 2016 9:35 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

'The Aviator' movie with Leonardo DiCaprio as bizarre billionaire Howard Hughes: Bloated biopic. 'The Aviator' movie review: What's not good for the Spruce Goose… Imagine Citizen Kane directed by the Steven Spielberg of The Color Purple, Schindler's List, Amistad, and Saving Private Ryan. The final result would look something like a Barry Levinson film – for instance, the superficial and phony Bugsy. Or, an even more appropriate example, the superficial, phony, and bloated The Aviator. Except, of course, that Levinson is not the man responsible for the 2004 mega-production starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the eccentric, billionaire ladies' man Howard Hughes. Strangely enough, that man is Martin Scorsese, the director of hard-hitting films such as Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and Gangs of New York. Scorsese, a fan of Old Hollywood, apparently wanted to have some fun with the reported $110 million budget (approx. $138 million in 2016) made available to him. The director no doubt had a ball while making The Aviator, »

Christopher Walken Launches a Musical Comeback in Trailer For ‘One More Time’

14 March 2016 8:13 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Sorry, but Christopher Walken isn’t leading a Daft Punk biopic. Rather, One More Time (previously titled When I Live My Life Over Again) is indeed music-related, but instead of Walken donning any sort of robot helmet, the film follows his character as an aging crooner who is attempting to launch a comeback in the industry, recently reunited with his daughter, played by Amber Heard. Directed by Robert Edwards, we now have the first trailer and poster ahead of a release next month.

In their review out of Tribeca last year,  THR noted, “Walken is the main attraction here; though the film identifies more with the wayward daughter, played by Amber Heard, it doesn’t make her nearly as interesting as his name-dropping, spotlight-hogging entertainer. The actor’s fans, who get too few chances to see him in this kind of role, should ensure that the likeable but underwhelming pic »
