Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa .5 Blu-ray Review

7 July 2014 8:40 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The problem with alternative comedy cuts is fairly self-evident: they’re made up of footage deemed less than what was actually released. Thus by their very make-up, they are less funny than whatever original preferred version preceded them.  Bad Grandpa .5 makes a valiant attempt to overcome these short-comings (at least for the first half) by being less a collection of unused footage and more a behind the scenes making of.  Hit the jump for my Bad Grandpa .5 Blu-ray review.  The behind-the-scenes first half tends to be the stronger section of Bg .5. Here – there’s a focus on the beginning of the “sixty-day” shoot with Johnny Knoxville admittedly less-than-enthusiastic in the early going. We watch as Knoxville undergoes the torturous make-up process to become the titular “Bad Grandpa”: Irving Zisman. This is intercut with the various incarnations of Irving over the course of each Jackass film. It’s interesting to »

The Top 10 Carnival Horror Movies!

18 March 2014 1:08 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Word on the interwebs is that American Horror Story season 4 is going to be set in a Carnival or play with the idea of a Circus-theme.  I’ve been craving the Ahs touch on a carnival ever sense the appearance of ‘Pepper’ in Season 2.  If you don’t think she was modeled by something out of Tod Browning’s Freaks, you need to do your homework.  While there is still no “official” word from Ryan Murphy confirming the season’s theme, the Internet is already swarming with theories, fan art, and dream casts.  Circuses and Carnivals play a very prominent role in the history of American entertainment, but it’s sadly becoming a dying art form.  I can’t even remember the last time a carnival came to town and allowed me to get funnel cake drunk before trying to pretend I couldn’t see the missing screws on the Tilt-a-Whirl. »

$250 Makeup Budget for 'Dallas Buyers Club' Goes a Long Way

19 February 2014 8:40 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I was beginning to wonder if Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa may actually have a chance at the Oscar for Best Makeup & Hairstyling after it won for Best Special Makeup Effects with the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild, but can we really expect the Academy to stand up there on Oscar night and have someone read off, "And the Oscar goes to... Stephen Prouty and Tony Gardner for Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa"c Nah, it's just another one of those "it's great to be nominated" things and a new story from Vanity Fair lets us in on why Robin Mathews' work on Dallas Buyers Club is so impressive: Robin Mathews's budget for the makeup on Dallas Buyers Club was $250. That's $250 not just to transform Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto from near-death AIDS patients to relatively healthy-looking human beings, sometimes five times in a single day. That's not $250 to »

The Top 9 Sam Raimi Films - Horror and Otherwise

18 February 2014 7:30 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

From his modest start in that ramshackle cabin in the woods what must seem like a lifetime ago, Sam Raimi has become one of the more versatile and beloved directors in Hollywood. With Scream Factory's Blu-ray release of Darkman today, we bring you our Top 9 Sam Raimi Films - Horror and Otherwise.

We're going to keep this list to films directed by Raimi. If we were to include the movies he's acted in, or god forbid produced, we'd be here all night. But a few of his production credits like 30 Days of Night, both of The Grudge films, Boogeyman, The Possession, Timecop and of course the Evil Dead remake are noteworthy.

Some honorable directorial mentions include his most recent, Oz the Great and Powerful. It might not have been the epic it was billed to be, but it looked fantastic; and when you manage to haul in half a billion »

Make-Up and Hair Awards: Marriage Proposal Upstages Johnny Depp

16 February 2014 12:00 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

While the attention was on Johnny Depp and other honorees for the evening, the 11th Make-Up Artists and Hair Style Guild Awards paused for an onstage marriage proposal between two young men.

When host Tom Arnold paused for a “special moment,” a video of Chris Heller dancing and singing to Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” played on the big screen. Afterwards Heller got down on one knee and propose to his boyfriend of four years, Ryan Sirois, 30. Neither were artists being honored at the evening’s event, but Heller was a friend of someone who helped put the awards show together.

The evening, at the Paramount Studios Theater on Saturday, was a long time coming, as this was the first make-up and hairstyle awards show in ten years.

Arnold opened the ceremony with a top 10 list of things only make-up and hair stylists have to deal with. The list included requests such as, »

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa Oscar Featurette 'Makeup Effects'

16 January 2014 5:02 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

When the 86th Annual Academy Awards nominations were announced today, Hollywood heavyweights such as Tom Hanks and Oprah Winfrey were among the notable snubs, as they failed to earn nods for their performances in Captain Phillips and Lee Daniels' the Butler. However, one of the more surprising nominees this morning was Stephen Prouty for Best Makeup and Hairstyling in the raucous comedy Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, where the 42-year-old Johnny Knoxville was convincingly transformed into the 86-year-old Irving Zisman. To celebrate this prestigious honor, Paramount Home Media Distribution has provided us with a behind-the-scenes featurette from the upcoming Blu-ray release on January 28, that centers on the makeup process Johnny Knoxville had to go through each day, and also features interviews with Johnny Knoxville and the director. Plus, we also have quotes from Johnny Knoxville and makeup artist/Oscar nominee Stephen Prouty who share their thoughts about today's big news.

Oscar nominees: the reactions

A constellation of nominees express humility, gratitude on the day of the Academy Award nominations.

Amanda Nevill, BFI CEO – “It’s fantastic to see the Academy putting the UK’s vibrant and thriving film industry firmly in the international spotlight. Britain’s world-leading studios and VFX facilities take centre stage in the spectacular Gravity, and the ability of our visionary directors to bring true stories to life with extraordinary effect is seen so vividly in Stephen Frears’ BFI and BBC Films-supported Philomena and Steve McQueen’s Film4-backed 12 Years A Slave.

“With Oscar recognition for on- and off-screen British talent across so many categories, these nominations help remind us that the UK’s film industry is something we can all be hugely proud of. All of these brilliant, talented people are winners in my eyes and I wish them all the luck in the world.”

Oscars: ‘Bad Grandpa’ Goes Where ‘Butler’ Can’t

16 January 2014 9:35 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

It’s true: The Academy likes movies about old people — just not the ones you might have been expecting.

While films like “Lee DanielsThe Butler” were surprisingly shut out of this year’s Oscar nominees, the Johnny Knoxville comedy “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa” received a nod, albeit for Stephen Prouty’s makeup effects.

This isn’t much of a surprise. Given its subject matter, the hair and makeup category has routinely brought in non-traditional nominees. Past winners in this category have included the 1996 “Nutty Professor” (awarded to Rick Baker and David LeRoy Anderson) and 2010′s “The Wolfman” (awarded to Rick Baker and Dave Elsey). Of course, this hasn’t stopped the Internet from taking aim, even if Knoxville himself is overjoyed.

“What an honor that Stephen Prouty got nominated for best makeup and hairstyling for ‘Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa,’” he said in a statement. “Am I as stunned as »
