Jessabelle Tells a Familiar Tale: A Movie Review

26 November 2014 4:00 AM, PST | 28 Days Later Analysis | See recent 28 Days Later Analysis news »

*there are spoilers here. Director: Kevin Greutert. Writer: Robert Ben Garant. Cast: Sarah Snook, Joelle Carter, Mark Webber, David Andrews and Ana de la Reguera. Jessabelle is a supernatural thriller. This title was recently released through video-on-demand, by Blumhouse Production. Lacking in any true horror, the film offers a great setting, but a mundane tone. Thrills are relegated to a few fight scenes as the protagonist does her best to uncover a long buried family secret. Her digging uncovers several tropes, with the film moving towards a predictable conclusion. Jessabelle is a very watered down thriller, which will satisfy few. The story begins with tragedy. Jessabelle (Sarah Snook) is ready to start a family, with her boyfriend and new baby. A speeding semi, in a residential area, puts her dreams to rest, permanently. Jessabelle is forced to stay with her father, in a remote mansion. Here, she begins to see strange visions, »

Watch Robin Williams Bust Out Tr One Last Time In The Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb Trailer

Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb is quickly gaining on us, and we have the latest (and probably last) trailer to the series' final entry. Enjoy below, at your leisure. As promised, writers Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, as well as stars Ben Stiller and the late Robin Williams, have delivered the third Night At The Museum. While it's not set in the Liberace museum as the writers cheekily suggested when first asked about the project, it is set in the British Museum. There, Larry Daley (Stiller) and his usual gang of museum exhibit pals will try and unlock the secret of the Egyptian tablet that makes all of the exhibits come to life. MovieClips Trailers broke the preview recently, which promises to be the "final Night" for the moderately successful series. Whether it was planned that way in the beginning or not, it's probably for the »

Watch: Final Trailer for 'Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb'

12 November 2014 7:21 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"This place is waking up for the first time, and we have no idea what's out there." Though the Night at the Museum franchise is geared towards kids and families, it's written by Thomas Lennon & Robert Ben Garant, so there's always been a decent amount of comedy for adults to enjoy too. That certainly seems to be the cast in the latest trailer for the final adventure, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. New faces each get a moment to shine from Rebel Wilson as a new museum night guard to Dan Stevens, proving that he can do anything, as he plays an upbeat, heroic Sir Lancelot. And Ben Stiller gets to play two roles this time, adding a caveman into the mix. This honestly looks like some good fun! Watch below! Exclusive Interview: Kevin Greutert Talks Jessabelle, New Projects & Reflects on the Saw Franchise

6 November 2014 6:04 PM, PST | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

This Friday, Kevin Greutert’s Southern gothic supernatural film Jessabelle is arriving in limited theaters and on VOD courtesy of Lionsgate. Written by Reno 911 alum Robert Ben Garant and starring Sarah Snook and Mark Webber, Jessabelle follows the titular character (played by Snook) who encounters something sinister living inside her childhood home when she returns there to recuperate after a devastating accident.

Daily Dead recently spoke with Greutert about his experiences working on the otherworldly horror drama and how his inability to helm Paranormal Activity 2 for Blumhouse Productions a few years ago (due to contractual obligations post-Saw VI) led to him to taking on Jessabelle for Jason Blum shortly thereafter. Greutert also discussed his latest horror project , Visions, which was also produced by Blumhouse and reflected on his involvement with the Saw franchise and how his editing style helped define the ‘look’ of the series.

Icons of Fright Interviews Jessabelle/Saw VI&VII Director Kevin Greutert!

5 November 2014 8:01 PM, PST | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Before making his way into directing, Kevin Greutert established himself as one hell of an editor, having edited everything from The Strangers and The Collection, to the first five Saw films, before successfully making the transition into directing. Staying in the franchise until its supposed end (last week’s press conference put an end to “the end”), Greutert stepped behind the camera to direct the return to form Saw VI and Saw VII. With the Jigsaw-led series over for the time being, Greutert recently jumped into directing again, with the Blumhouse film, Jessabelle (hitting theaters and VOD on November 7th via Lionsgate), a southern gothic tale of a woman confined to a wheelchair, and dealing with supernatural forces attempting to get her (our review).

Greutert was nice enough to chat with us a bit regarding Jessabelle, the Saw series and  what’s in store for him next. Read on!

Ring Her Bell: Greutert Steps Outside Franchise For Promising Results

Considering that Jessabelle is directed by editor and eventual director of two Saw films, Kevin Greutert (he got credit for six and straight-to-dvd release number seven), his first foray outside of schlock genre isn’t the torporific eyesore one might have predicted. Written by Robert Ben Garant, better known as Deputy Travis Junior from the series “Reno 911!,” the film manages enough general interest to keep us wondering what will happen to its protagonist, even though it’s lack of tension and absence of thrills racks up quite a bit of dismay. Though a pleasantly peculiar finale at last breaks free of its quagmire of cliché, it can’t quite make up for the inert build-up, as well as a handful of illogical details that annul any of the film’s more successful moments.

Jessabelle Review

2 November 2014 9:01 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Jessabelle is a bit of an odd experience, blending a fangless voodoo fantasy with some seriously unnerving scares about inner-demons going bump in the night. While such an imbalance might not sound completely unheard of, the seamless way Reno 911! prankster Robert Ben Garant scripts this Southern spooker manages to polish rougher edges with invasive psychological horror that’s surprisingly nightmare-worthy. Even with director Kevin Greutert’s horror experience coming from the overly-gory Saw franchise – specifically the final two splatterfests – Jessabelle remains solely story-driven thanks to atmospheric haunted house tropes, not distracting, stomach-churning gore. Isn’t it nice when horror movies respect their audience and take time to craft white-knuckle scares worthy of a few less hours of sleep, instead of Ouija-like backhanded scare tactics?

Sarah Snook stars as the titular Jessabelle, a daughter returning to her sleepy Louisiana home while recuperating from a tragic car accident. Her father (David Andrews), now a callous drunk, »

Dwayne Johnson Attached to 'Baywatch' Movie at Paramount Pictures

2 October 2014 8:53 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

We've been hearing about a potential film adaptation of the cheesy lifeguard TV series Baywatch since as far back as 2009. The first iteration had The Break-Up director Jeremy Garelick writing and getting behind the camera while more recent efforts pegged Robert Ben Garant, one-half of the writing duo behind Night at the Museum, to direct the film with Bill Hader briefly rumored for a lead role. Now the film seems to have life again as THR reports Dwayne Johnson is loosely attached to lead what will be a comedic take on the material with We're the Millers writing duo Sean Anders & John Morris set to direct now. More below! Johnson's name has been floated around the project before, but with no solid links. This still seems a little shaky, but an action comedy in the same vein as the 21 Jump Street franchise would be great with Johnson on board. As for the script, »

Dwayne Johnson to Star in 'Baywatch' Movie

2 October 2014 3:40 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

After languishing in development for several years, Paramount is finally moving forward with their Baywatch adaptation, which now has Dwayne Johnson loosely attached to star.

Sean Anders and John Morris (Horrible Bosses 2) will direct, with Justin Malen (Bad Teacher 2) set to rewrite the script. A number of writers have previously written drafts of the script, including Jeremy Garelick (The Wedding Ringer) and Peter Tolan (Rescue Me). One of the earlier stories revolved around a series of shark attacks that lead the Baywatch lifeguarding team to investigate a drug smuggling operation. No details were given for Justin Malen's new take on the story.

Back in January 2013, we reported that Bill Hader was in talks to star in Baywatch, although his reps denied the report. Robert Ben Garant was attached to direct at that time, but this was the last we had heard about the project until now.

Dwayne Johnson has aptly been labeled “franchise steroids” for his ability to revitalize series like The Fast and the Furious, G.I. Joe, and even Journey to the Center of the Earth with his incredible charisma and screen presence.  This will be put to the ultimate test very soon, as THR now reports that Johnson is attached to star in the Baywatch movie for Paramount Pictures.  Moreover, the writing team of Sean Anders and John Morris have come aboard to direct the film after making their helming debut on the upcoming comedy Horrible Bosses 2.  More on this development after the jump. Per THR, Johnson is now loosely attached to star in Paramount’s Baywatch movie as the studio is moving forward with the film by hiring Justin Malen to do a script rewrite and Anders and Morris to direct.  The feature film adaptation of the delightfully cheesy 1990s TV series »

Rocky and Bullwinkle return in new short on 'Mr. Peabody & Sherman' 3-D Blu-ray

2 October 2014 8:00 AM, PDT | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

Mr. Peabody and Sherman were the stars of one of last winter's most popular animated films. It was a well-deserved and long overdue promotion, since the characters got their start in 1959 as supporting characters in the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon universe. Well, the tables have turned. Of course, if Rocky and Bullwinkle are back, then Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale can't be far behind. »

Michael Eisner’s Tornante Taps Jim & Brian Kehoe To Script Olympic Village Comedy

23 September 2014 5:00 PM, PDT | Deadline New York | See recent Deadline New York news »

Exclusive: Michael Eisner’s Tornante Company is following its Netflix show BoJack Horseman by creating some feature film action. Tornante has set the comedy writing duo of Jim & Brian Kehoe to pen an untitled comedy in a mid-six-figure deal. I’m told the idea centers on the Olympic Village. The siblings have several projects around town, including their 2012 Black List entry Cherries, which has Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg producing for Good Universe alongside Dmg, with John Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg directing.

The Kehoes are currently rewriting Thomas Lennon & Ben Garant’s Disney script The Wheelman, and they sold their action comedy pitch Top Of The Food Chain for mid-six figures to Lionsgate, with Tyler Perry’s 34th Street Films and Dmg producing. Cherries sold as a spec shortly after Endgame purchased the Kehoes’ previous spec script, You Complete Us, for Adam Shankman and Offspring. The scribes are repped by »

Michael Eisner’s Tornante Developing Olympic Village Comedy (Exclusive)

19 September 2014 11:22 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Michael Eisner’s Tornante Co. is making a splash in the feature film business, developing an Olympic Village comedy.

Tornante has hired the comedy writing team Jim and Brian Kehoe to pen an untitled internal comedy idea. The logline is being kept under wraps, but centers around the Olympic Village.

Eisner, who was the CEO of Disney for 17 years, founded Tornante in 2005 and acquired Topps baseball card publishers, Internet chore site TaskRabbit and made-for-Internet production shingle Vuguru.

Eisner signed a worldwide distribution deal in late 2012 with Universal, under which Uni agreed to put up the P&A for a certain amount of qualifying pictures, returning Eisner to the moviemaking business.

Netflix acquired Tornante’s animated comedy “Bojack Horseman,” with a voice cast including Will Arnett and Aaron Paul, late last year in the streamer’s first adult-oriented animated original.

The Kehoe Brothers sold their Black List script “Cherries” to Good Universe in 2012 with Seth Rogen, »
