Read the full list of 2012 nominations

On Sunday evening the great and good of UK telly will gather at the Royal Festival Hall for the British Academy Television Awards – a celebration of the best programmes and performances of the past year that also tends to provoke controversy. (Last year's big, although entirely foreseeable upset: Towie beating Sherlock to the Bafta YouTube audience award. This year's potential upset: Celebrity Juice doing the same). So who should be sweeping off with what? We discussed the nominations – and in some cases lack of them – in a blog when they were released. But now it's time to pick our winners.

The acting categories seem particularly close this year, with Benedict Cumberbatch, Dominic West, John Simm and Joseph Gilgun all »

Liev Schreiber, Sally Hawkins and Romola Garai Will Spend ‘The Last Days on Mars’

16 April 2012 6:00 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Ruairi Robinson got a few headlines when, about a year ago, he debuted Blinky™, a science fiction short that featured the acting talents of Max Records (Where the Wild Things Are); past that, his career has been a little slower than some may prefer.. However, The Daily Mail (via ThePlaylist) reports that he’s wrangled a trio of players for a sci-fi feature, The Last Days on Mars, which will begin shooting in July.

Liev Schreiber, Sally Hawkins, and Romola Garai (One Day, Atonement) will be leading the film, written by Clive Dawson and based on a short story by Sydney J. Bounds. It follows eight astronauts on a Mars space station who encounter danger when they discover an unknown, dangerous bacteria; BleedingCool, having read the script, described it as something of a horror film, what with “a lot of business with airlocks that could be outstandingly tense if deftly handled. »

Liev Schreiber, Sally Hawkins & Romola Garai To Star In Ruari Robinson's Sci-Fi 'The Last Days On Mars'

13 April 2012 6:41 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Is there a curse of sci-fi movies set on Mars? We don't believe that, but there's plenty of evidence to support that theory, with virtually every film set on our nearest planetary neighbor -- from "Mission To Mars" to "Red Planet" from "Ghosts Of Mars" and "Mars Needs Moms" to "John Carter" -- all disappointing critically, commercially or both. But director Ruairi Robinson ain't afraid of no curse.

The Irish filmmaker made his name with the Oscar-nominated animated short "Fifty Percent Grey," and has since made a couple of acclaimed live-action tinged shorts -"Silent City" with Cillian Murphy and "Blinky" with Max Records (watch both below). But despite the director being briefly attached to the live-action remake of "Akira" in the middle of the last decade, he's been yet to move into the feature film world, but he's about to finally get rolling on his debut.

So, what are we watching this week? Lots and lots of television. Many of us have returned to Westeros with "Game of Thrones," while others are traveling to other, considerably funnier wintery landscapes. Get those recommendations and more in this week's inaugural edition of Watch It.

This week's new film events

2 March 2012 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Kinoteka Polish Film Festival, London, Belfast & Edinburgh

The presence of Juliette Binoche gets this festival off to a high-profile start – she plays a French journalist studying teenage prostitution in Elles. And the prestige continues with Agnieszka Holland's Oscar-nominated In Darkness, a Schindler's List-like wartime drama. More interesting though are Suicide Room, an angsty teen movie partly set in a virtual world, and Courage, mixing biblical themes with modern social commentary. This being the festival's 10th anniversary, there are also classic Polish films selected by 10 top film-makers, including Mike Leigh, Andrzej Wajda and Nicolas Roeg, plus – in London – a special concert with master composer Krzysztof Penderecki and Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood.

Various venues, Thu to 22 Mar

Bev Springs 2012, London

Sadly there weren't sufficient funds to mount a full-blown Bird's Eye View festival this year, but the event won't be kept down. So, to mark International Women's Day, there's an evening of international shorts, »

Maureen Ryan: 'The Hour' Is The Next Period Drama You'll Fall For

15 February 2012 12:33 PM, PST | Aol TV. | See recent Aol TV. news »

BBC America premiered the handsome retro drama "The Hour" in August 2011, but you may not have noticed.

It's hard for programs that debut in the dog days of summer to get traction in the media, and when "The Hour" arrived, a lot of TV writers had just dragged themselves from San Diego Comic-Con to the Television Critics Association press tour, a brain-consuming beast that lasts for weeks. I must confess I was one of those people who never got around to writing about the British import, though Ryan McGee and I did devote a Talking TV podcast to the show.

In any event, if you missed this worthy drama the first time around, the good news is that BBC America is re-running "The Hour" in its entirety starting 9 p.m. E.T. Wednesday.

Why should you watch it? Thanks for asking, I happen to have some reasons prepared!

Chemical Brothers – the movie: do not adjust your eyeballs

25 January 2012 2:22 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The Chemical Brothers' famously psychedelic live act has finally been captured in film – with flying cutlery and clowns. Alexis Petridis reports on Don't Think

Adam Smith is the first to admit that his debut feature film is not the easiest sell in the history of cinema. "There's no real narrative strand," says the director. "It's 85 minutes long, it's got paintballs exploding – and clowns. I was saying to someone the other day, 'You'd never commission it, would you?'" He laughs. "It sounds rubbish, you know?"

Seated across the table from Smith in a west London pub, Tom Rowlands, one half of the Chemical Brothers, frowns. "There is," he says heavily, "some music in it is as well." But even taking into account the film's subject matter – the Chemical Brothers headlining Fuji Rock festival in Niigata, Japan, last year – Don't Think still seems on the face of it an unlikely candidate for cinematic glory. »

Meryl Streep thanked "everybody in England" for allowing her to come and "trample all over their history" as she picked up her Golden Globe award for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher.

The Oscar-winning actress spoke of the "thrill" of winning the prize for best actress (drama) after playing Baroness Thatcher in the film The Iron Lady.

"This is such a thrill but really, really embarrassing in a year that saw so many extraordinary performances by women in leading roles - by my friends, by people I do not know, by people that I am so inspired by," she said in her acceptance speech.

The 62-year-old, who received her award from British actor Colin Firth, remembered during her speech that she did not have her glasses with her and would have to give her speech from memory.

"Oh, I am going to have to remember my speech!" she said. She added: »
