Simon Gallagher’s Top 10 Films of 2010

30 December 2010 6:35 PM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Matt here…

So here’s Simon’s roll of 2010 top ten dice. Does the guy need an introduction by now? (Hint: His posts include an avatar of him dressed up like Hellboy!). He’s been with us for the past two years and I’ve known him for a little longer, still the only Owf Writer who was a personal friend before he wrote his first review for us. And he’s wrote many a great once since, including some of the best feature articles we’ve ever published (More Grit Please We’re British, Inception 101) and although I don’t have the stats to prove it, I’m pretty sure his passion for cinema has resulted in by far the biggest words per article ratio of anyone around here!

Enjoy this top ten from a mainstay of Owf… and oh, it seems like him choosing The Shop Around The Corner »

Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie top 2010's money-making movie stars

30 December 2010 10:43 AM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Despite critical panning, "The Tourist" not only snagged Golden Globe nominations, but it helped make Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie the biggest movie stars of the year.

According to Quigley Publishing Company's 79th Annual Poll of Motion Picture Exhibitors, the co-stars take the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The poll asks movie exhibitors which stars they think generated the most box office moolah for the year. This is a pretty good indicator of a star's real box-office draw. (See the top earners for 2010)

Depp is on top yet again, having finished first in 2007 and 2006 also. This year his resume boasts "Alice in Wonderland" and "The Tourist." With the fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" due out in 2011, he's likely to appear on the Top 10 again next year.

Jolie's claim to box office fame this year is owed to her super-spy turn in "Salt" and setting Depp up in "The Tourist."

10 Best Movie Quotes Of 2010

30 December 2010 8:13 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

The most memorable movie lines require three things: They must sound like something a real person (or at least the character uttering them) would, you know, actually say; they must be smarter, funnier and snappier than what a real person would actually say (this sounds like it would contradict the first point, but it doesn't); and they must have a great actor to give them a great delivery. It's a delicate balance, and one that takes both skill -- and a tiny bit of luck -- to achieve.

This year was packed with plenty of ear-pleasing, intensely quotable movie quotes, ranging from the highbrow ("The Social Network" and "True Grit") to the not-so-highbrow ("The Other Guys" and "Machete"). Some movies -- here's looking at you, "Social Network" -- were so full of amazing one-liners and witty exchanges that I could have made a top 10 list just drawing from them. But in the interest of fairness, »

By Sean O’Connell

Hollywoodnews.com: Who was the biggest star of 2010?

From a financial standpoint, it was Johnny Depp.

Quigley Publishing Company’s 79th Annual Poll of Motion Picture Exhibitors named Depp the Top Money-Making Star of 2010. According to a release, it is Depp’s sixth appearance in the poll, including two other first place finishes in 2007 and 2006.

Depp dominated the poll for his work in both “Alice in Wonderland” and “The Tourist.” Ironically, it was Depp’s “Tourist” co-star, Angelina Jolie, who placed second this year based on “Salt” and “The Tourist.” Robert Downey, Jr. made it to No. 3 for his third consecutive year in the survey, with 2010 roles in “Iron Man 2″ and “Due Date.” The top 5 rounded out with Matt Damon and Steve Carell.

And with a fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” film on the docket, don’t be surprised to see Depp’s name in »

Zach Galifianakis in Due Date: Theatre Geek

Digg this! Stumble upon something good? Share it on StumbleUpon Tweet This! Share this on Facebook Share this on del.icio.us

Costume design in comedy film is a delicate balancing act between straight and farcical. How far can an outfit go before a gag is too conspicuous? Floppy hats? Clown shoes? For Due Date, costume designer Louise Mingenbach worked closely with Zach Galifianakis to create his character’s look. Immature and unaware, yet still believable; Ethan Tremblay is the archetype of comic dress up.

Speaking exclusively to Clothes on Film, Louise explains her costume choices for the movie, how to keep a joke from becoming tired and the process of designer/actor collaboration:

Ethan’s costume is manifest in two stages, when he swaps out a plain grey t-shirt for a coral ‘Lilith Fair’ long sleeve t-shirt in the story’s second act. The Lilith Fair shirt tells us »

DVD Review

Frenemy

Directed by: Gregory Dark

Cast: Matthew Modine, Callum Blue, Adam Baldwin, Lisa Brenner, Zach Galifianakis

Running Time: 1 hr 20 mins

Rating: R

Due Out: December 14, 2010

Plot: Two men wander around Los Angeles after surviving a bank robbery at a porn store while discussing the possibilities of destiny intervening with their traumatic moment.

Who’S It For? People who are dedicated to finishing an entire movie, even if it appears that nothing is happening for a large chunk of it (even if the movie is only seventy-six minutes long).

Movie:

Talk doesn’t have to be cheap. Thousands of films, (especially those by Tarantino, who is idealized here in both conversational topics and soundtrack), can have an audience fully on board just with walking and talking heads discussing anything. Owf’s 52 Must See Films of 2011

24 December 2010 11:00 PM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Usually around this time of the year we list maybe 10 or 20 films that we think are as absolute ‘Must See’s’ for what the next 12 months of cinema has to offer us but as the clock is ticking ever closer to midnight on 2010, we thought we would challenge ourselves a little further this time around. The question I posed to the Owf staff recently was… can Cinema in 2011 produce enough ‘Must See’ films to hit 52, which would ratio out to be just one film per week? That’s all we are hopeful for here… just one film every Friday that justifies us parting with our ever increasingly important cash in these tough economic times.

Did we manage to find 52? Kind of.

There’s certainly 52 films listed here but once we got to around 30, the whole thing became a struggle and we had to fill it out disappointingly with the usual array of over-budgeted summer spectacles, »

Jack Black compares new “Muppet” movie to “Being John Malkovich”

23 December 2010 7:03 AM, PST | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

By Sean O’Connell

Hollywoodnews.com: If you grew up in the 70s and 80s, childhood nostalgia is going to wash over you like a tidal wave in 2011. “The Smurfs” are heading to the big screen in August. Winnie the Pooh is getting a feature-length film. And The Muppets are putting on one more show in an effort to save their cherished theater.

Except this new “Muppet” movie sounds like it’s going to be much different than “The Great Muppet Caper” or “The Muppets Take Manhattan.”

“It’s kind of like ‘Being John Malkovich.’ It is a new twist on the Muppets. Very cerebral and meta,” said Jack Black, who revealed that he will be playing himself in Jason Bobin’s new feature which also stars Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Rashida Jones, Emily Blunt and Zach Galifianakis – some as co-stars, and some as celebrity cameos.
