Box Office: ‘Deepwater Horizon’ No Match for Tim Burton’s ‘Miss Peregrine’s’

6 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Tim Burton has had a rough spell at the box office. “Big Eyes” was an Oscar contender that failed to grab any gold, “Frankenweenie” was a bridge too bizarre for family crowds, and “Dark Shadows,” starring Johnny Depp, revived a campy ’70s show that most of America had forgotten. Burton, once a reliable purveyor of popcorn hits, hasn’t scored since 2010’s “Alice in Wonderland.”

But the director of “Batman” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” is on firmer ground with “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” an adaptation of the best-selling novel about a young boy who is taken in by an orphanage populated by children with extraordinary powers. It’s mixture of the magical and the macabre seems a perfect fit for Burton’s quirky sensibility. The film is expected to open in first place, with roughly $26 million when it debuts in 3,520 locations. Fox is distributing the film, »

Gal Gadot Strips Down in First Keeping Up with the Joneses Clip

6 hours ago | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Suspecting something is off with her new neighbor, Karen Gaffney (Isla Fisher) decides to spy on Natalie Jones (Gal Gadot) in a new clip from Keeping Up with the Joneses, in theaters October 21. What Karen doesn't quite realize is that Karen is an actual, real-life spy. After following her to a Bloomingdale's fitting room, Natalie surprises her by coming out of the fitting room wearing some skimpy lingerie.

20th Century Fox debuted this first clip on YouTube earlier today, arriving more than three months after the first trailer debuted. This spy comedy certainly will have quite the challenge when it opens in mid-October, during one of the most crowded weekends of the year. Keeping Up With the Joneses will hit theaters on October 21, going up against Paramount's Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Universal's Ouija: Origins of Evil, Lionsgate's Boo! A Madea Halloween and PureFlix's I'm Not Ashamed.

The Weekend Warrior 9/30/2016: Deepwater Horizon, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Masterminds

12 hours ago | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.

This Past Weekend:

While the new movies reigned at the box office this past weekend, both Antoine Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven (Sony) and the animated Storks (Warner Bros.) didn’t fare nearly as well as our projections, both falling short by about $10 million. The Magnificent Seven, starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, fared decently with $34.7million, which is about the average for Washington’s films, but the fourth highest opening for a Western after last year’s The Revenant, the animated Rango, and Cowboys and Aliens. Storks’ $21.3 million opening wasn’t great compared to other animated September releases with Sony still holding the September opening record with Hotel Transylvania 2, but it should continue to do well with no other animated movies opening for another month. »

Win Passes To The Advance Screening Of Masterminds In St. Louis

In this action comedy based on true events, directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite; Nacho Libre), David Ghantt (Zach Galifianakis) discovers the true meaning of adventure far beyond his wildest dreams. He is an uncomplicated man stuck in a monotonous life. Day in and day out he drives an armored vehicle, transporting millions of other people’s money with no escape in sight. The only glimmer of excitement is his flirtatious work crush Kelly Campbell (Kristen Wiig) who soon lures him into the scheme of a lifetime.

Along with a group of half-brained criminals led by Steve Chambers (Owen Wilson) and an absurdly faulted heist plan, David manages the impossible and makes off with $17 million in cash…only problem is he foolishly hands the money over to this wild group of double crossers and has been set up to take the fall. Can Miss Peregrine Beat Magnificent Seven at the Box Office?

27 September 2016 10:11 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

September has proven to be quite the difficult month for box office predictions, with three newcomers under-performing two weeks ago, and last weekend's winner The Magnificent Seven over-performing to win with $34.7 million. This weekend, three newcomers arrive to close out the month, 20th Century Fox's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Lionsgate's Deepwater Horizon and Relativity's Masterminds. Only one can take home the box office crown, and we're predicting that movie will be Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

Box Office Mojo reports that Miss Peregrine will debut in roughly 3,400 theaters this weekend, with Deepwater Horizon opening in an estimated 3,000 theaters while Masterminds is set to open in roughly 2,800 theaters. While there is no Rotten Tomatoes score for Masterminds, both Miss Peregrine (62% Fresh) and Deepwater Horizon (89% Fresh) are faring quite well with the critics thus far. We're predicting that Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children will come out on top this weekend with $32.4 million. »

Galifianakis was joined on the carpet by David Ghantt, the real-life ex-con he plays in the film. He explained to Variety that the first time they sat down to meet over lunch in Santa Monica, he was instantly able to find the good in the bank robber’s DNA.

“It was easy to have empathy for him,” Galifianakis explained to Variety. “David is actually a very sweet guy. »

Trump Stoppers: How Filmmakers Are Making a Difference in Swing States

27 September 2016 9:30 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The idea behind the Local Voices neighbor-to-neighbor campaign is simple: use a documentary approach to capture the concerns every day Americans have about Donald Trump in unscripted, personal commentaries and then air them as one-minute ads in the same swing state communities where they were filmed.

Filmmaker Lee Hirsch (“Bully”), who started the Local Voices Democratic Super Pac in 2008, has spent the last three election cycles studying and experimenting with how best to engage and motivate voters.

“I’ve seen the same thing over and over again,” Hirsch wrote IndieWire, “election season is intense, and perceived community norms lead to an almost palpable intimidation that suppresses an honest public dialogue about the presidential candidates, and has the deepest affect on those who might be leaning towards the democratic ticket.”

Zach Galifianakis Doesn’t Want ‘Mentally Challenged’ Donald Trump on ‘Between Two Ferns’

After Zach Galifianakis‘ record-breaking “Between Two Ferns” episode with Hillary Clinton last week, the actor has no desire to have Donald Trump as a guest on the show. “I wouldn’t have somebody on that’s so mentally challenged,” he told the Los Angeles Times. “I feel like I’d be taking advantage of him. And you can print that.” He added that he has no “interest” in doing an episode with Trump because “he’s the kind of guy who likes attention — bad attention or good attention. So you’re dealing with a psychosis there that’s a little weird. »

Hillary Clinton’s ‘Between Two Ferns’ Episode Got 30 Million Views In 24 Hours

26 September 2016 9:55 AM, PDT | Tubefilter.com | See recent Tubefilter News news »

The latest episode of Between Two Ferns was a record-breaking hit for Funny or Die. As first shared by The Hollywood Reporter, the comedic conversation between Zach Galifianakis and Hillary Clinton drew more than 30 million views in its first 24 hours of activity, which is a better first-day performance than any other video in Funny or Die history.

The video hot start was primarily driven by two factors: The timing of its release, just days before the first Presidential debate between Clinton and Donald Trump, caused it to resonate across the politically-charged social media landscape. It was further boosted by the fact that it was the first new Between Two Ferns episode in almost two years. The insult-filled web series last showed up on our radar in October 2014, when Galifianakis roasted Brad Pritt and Louis C.K. in his typical cringe-worthy fashion.
