One of the great figures in early German expressionist cinema. A master of symbolism. First worked as a journalist. By 1906 was assistant to Max Reinhardt and applied for German citizenship. Wrote screenplays from 1915, notably
The Golem and
Nosferatu. As director, best known for
The Man Who Cheated Life and
A Daughter of Destiny. Fled Germany in 1933 for the United States, where he died in obscurity.
