CBS Sets Big Football Launch Platform for Reality Series ‘Hunted’

28 November 2016 9:00 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

CBS is devoting one of its strongest launch platforms to the reality series “Hunted,” which will debut Jan. 22 on the heels of the NFL’s Afc championship game.

The series has been a high priority for CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller. “Hunted” marks the first unscripted series he ordered after his promotion to head of entertainment programming in September 2015.

“Hunted” is also a big bet for Endemol Shine North America, which like CBS is in need of a new reality franchise. The company has been in the midst of an executive shuffle at the top, with co-ceo Charlie Corwin leaving the company earlier this month and Cris Abrego assuming the reins as solo CEO.

Based on a U.K. format, “Hunted” sends teams of ordinary people off on a mission to evade capture by an elite team of investigators. Teams that can stay underground for 28 days earn a grand prize of $250,000. Laura Fuest Silva, Brian Catalina »

How Donald Trump Rode Reality TV Fame to a Bid for the White House

26 April 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Donald Trump’s journey to becoming the Republican frontrunner for the presidential nomination began in earnest on Jan. 8, 2004 — the night “The Apprentice” premiered on NBC.

True, the real estate mogul had been a media darling for 20-plus years before he teamed with producer Mark Burnett on the business competition series. From the early ’80s, Trump was a fixture in the New York media firmament. His excesses, his love life and his personal boom-and-bust cycles have long been fodder for the tabloids, as well as the tonier pages of Vanity Fair and other high-brow publications.

Trump often raised the stakes in his business dealings by orchestrating press conferences that made for great copy. His running feud with Ed Koch became a spectator sport for most of the New York mayor’s years in office.

But Trump’s image to the vast expanse of the American electorate was cemented by “The Apprentice” more than anything else. »

Inside Endemol Shine’s Ambitious Plan to Conquer Global TV

29 March 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

When top executives of Endemol Shine Group gather next week at the Majestic hotel in Cannes, the scene inside the conference room might be mistaken for a United Nations Security Council meeting.

Germany, France, Italy, Australia, Israel, Russia, China and Switzerland are among the more than 30 territories that will be represented alongside the superpowers of North America and the U.K. at an extra-long table. The gathering is so large that there’s a microphone and a nameplate with country flag set out for each participant.

The brainstorming and information-sharing sessions will be held largely in English, although there will be side conversations among smaller groups in numerous native tongues. Coinciding with the annual MipTV international sales conference, the group will spend a few days talking shop, screening projects and generally arming themselves with the latest market intel.
