8 'Stranger Things' songs that prove the series isn't totally period-accurate

19 August 2016 4:28 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

One of the most consistently-praised elements of Netflix's breakaway hit Stranger Things is the series' use of music, from Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein's pulsing, synth-driven theme song to the period-specific pop tunes that dominate the soundtrack. Except...are said tunes actually period-specific? No, as it turns out! After a very serious, in-depth investigation on Google, I discovered that a number of the tracks featured in the series are in fact anachronistic -- i.e. released after 1983, the year in which Stranger Things is set. This is shocking, I know, but we all have to accept it. Breathe and remain calm as you browse the full list of non-period-accurate songs from the series below. Note: For added context, each entry is additionally marked "diegetic" (music that exists within the narrative realm of the show, i.e. that can be heard by the characters) or "non-diegetic" (music that exists outside »

20 years ago today: ‘The Frighteners’ opened in theaters

19 July 2016 7:00 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

A bit over a decade after Venkman and co. busted some ghosts, and nearly exactly two decades before Gilbert, Yates, and co. started their Ghostbusters, Michael J. Fox was having his own encounters with ghosts. 20 years ago today, The Frighteners opened in theaters. It was one year after Casper, another movie that had its male lead character seeing ghosts after the death of his wife. Frighteners was Peter Jackson’s theatrical film follow-up to Heavenly Creatures, and it was one of the earliest films that wowed audiences with visual effects by Jackson’s Weta Digital. It’s Fox’s last starring role in a live-action feature film. After Frighteners, he started his run on the TV series Spin City and then took on fewer major acting gigs after revealing his diagnosis with Parkinson’s. Hasn’t stopped Fox from taking the stage and rocking out with Coldplay as recently as this weekend. »

“Wanna sign my Dredd petition?”

When you hear ‘Star Trek‘, you probably think of things like ‘fast cars,’ ‘pop music’ and ‘Barbadian mega music stars’ – which is why it makes perfect sense that Rihanna’s new single, Sledgehammer, is all over the most recent trailer for Star Trek Beyond.

Spoilers: Star Trek Beyond involves The Ring crossover.

Although they should’ve gone with the Peter Gabriel track of the same name.

Watch: Star Trek Beyond trailer recut with Peter Gabriel ‘Sledgehammer’; it’s much better than Rihanna’s

2 July 2016 4:49 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Flickering Myth’s Oli Davis boldly goes where no Star Trek Beyond trailer has gone before…

“Wanna sign my Dredd petition?”

Star Trek Beyond’s most recent trailer debuted pop star Rihanna’s latest single, Sledgehammer.  It’s a rather clunky collaboration. Rihanna, an icon of aloof coolness and overt sexiness… and the Star Trek franchise – one of the most mocked pieces of geekdom for the last half century.

And while watching that trailer, with Rihanna space ballading about tears and stuff, I remembered another, much better song with the same name: ex-Genesis musician Peter Gabriel’s 1986 single Sledgehammer. Turns out it fits the teaser perfectly.

Move aside, RiRi.

Check Out The New 'Sledgehammer' Video For 'Star Trek Beyond'

30 June 2016 8:29 AM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

I guess I've been under a rock for the last week or so. I had no idea that Rihanna recorded a song for Star Trek Beyond, so when Kellvin asked me to cover this item I thought there was a new viral video for the film featuring Peter Gabriel's 80s classic "Sledgehammer." Turns out I was way off!

So here's the cosmic music video for Rihanna's Star Trek Beyond song "Sledgehammer."

Sledgehammer (From The Motion Picture

And, just for fun, here's the song I thought I'd be talking about:

I defy you to tell me that this wouldn't have been a better song for Star Trek Beyond!

Anyway, the latest entry in the J.J. Abrams-produced rebooted Star Trek film franchise, directed by Justin Lin, comes out on July 22. And Rihanna's new song for Star Trek Beyond, titled "Sledgehammer," is available for download now.

'Star Trek Beyond's' dramatic trailer debuts Rihanna's new single

27 June 2016 9:20 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Star Trek Beyond's trailers have been a mixed bag for fans of the franchise and the latest, which features a brand new song from Rihanna, is sure to be no different. It's a much more dramatic trailer this time around, that's for sure. We get some heartstrings pulled with a quick glimpse of Chris Hemsworth's cameo in the 2009 film as James T. Kirk's father, and the new Rihanna song is not upbeat and dance-able like most of her hits but rather somber and epic. What we don't get is a real look at Anton Yelchin's Chekov. Whether that's by happenstance, or whether Paramount and Justin Lin made a specific decision not to feature him so soon after his tragic passing, is unclear. Paramount pulled out of a fan Q&A last week out of respect for the actor. I'm interested to see how Trekkers respond to the »

At 40, Aardman Animations Stays Stubbornly Eccentric

10 June 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

In 1995, at pretty much the midpoint of Aardman Animations’ 40-year history, the Bristol-based cartoon studio’s co-founders, Peter Lord and David Sproxton, hatched the crazy idea of making a feature-length stop-motion film. It would be a send-up of the classic prison-break movie “The Great Escape.”

But starring chickens.

“It was really kind of a freak idea,” recalls Lord, who directed what became “Chicken Run,” the first of Aardman’s six features.

This was shortly before Pixar launched the CG revolution with “Toy Story,” and though Aardman was about to win its third Oscar for the Wallace and Gromit short “A Close Shave” [incidentally, the project in which it introduced hit character Shaun the Sheep], hardly anyone was making big-screen cartoon. In fact, apart from the work Henry Selick was doing for producer Tim Burton in the United States [most notably “A Nightmare Before Christmas”], the idea of an entire movie in stop-motion seemed outlandish.

“Audiences love that sense of tangibility, the sense that it isn’t perfect.” David Sproxton

Does the new ‘Finding Dory’ trailer feature Disney-Pixar’s first lesbian couple?

24 May 2016 10:51 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

A new trailer for Finding Dory dropped today. While there’s plenty to squee over (baby Dory! Octopus antics! Peter Gabriel paired with Pixar yet again!), what the Internet is slowly starting to notice and get excited over is the two characters who just might be Pixar’s first lesbian couple. As Twitter user @DLthings pointed out, the two women outside the Marine Life Institute in the trailer might hold this distinction. Here they are: They appear shortly after the one-minute mark in the trailer released this morning: This comes a few days after a petition to give Frozen’s Elsa a girlfriend made the rounds online. (Elsa herself a.k.a. Idina Menzel responded, “I think it’s great.”) There has been speculation before that Pixar had given audiences a lesbian character, Brave’s Merida being a notable instance of such theories. (Because if a princess prefers honing her »

Quantico Ep Talks Choosing a Bomber, [Spoiler]'s Fatal Sacrifice, Alex/Ryan Drama and the CIA in Season 2

Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Quantico season finale.

Quantico on Sunday wrapped its season-long mystery — who was really behind the Manhattan bombings? — tighter than a Nat’s henley left too long in the clothes dryer.

As revealed last week, Liam was the driving force behind the carnage originally blamed on Agent Alex Parrish… but he wasn’t the only one. So after we watched a quick rewind of Liam’s whereabouts while pulling the whole shebang together (set to a pretty great orchestral arrangement of Peter Gabriel’s “Digging in the Dirt”), we witnessed Alex & Co. realize that »

The 19 Greatest Whistling Songs of All Time

11 May 2016 6:35 PM, PDT | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

I have come to terms with the fact that I am a whistler. I'm one of those people who whistles - a lot. As a music addict, I inevitably have a song stuck in my head at all times, which outwardly manifests itself through whistling. Walking around the office or tooling around the house, I'm usually whistling, and half the time, I don't even realize it. I could blame my dad, who is also a whistler. But more so, I blame my love of music combined with the fact that I can't really sing and I don't play an instrument, but I can nail it when it comes to whistling. Not surprisingly, I find myself drawn to songs with prominent whistling parts; in fact, Whistling Songs is one of the first playlists I made when I joined Spotify. Lucky for you, I've curated 19 tracks that are pretty awesome, whether you enjoy whistling or not. »
