Pop Culture History Lesson: 'We Are the World' Turns 30

6 March 2015 1:28 PM, PST | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

It's hard to bet on the future, but of this I'm certain: Three decades from now, I'll still know every lyric to "We Are the World."

Released 30 years ago this week, the chart-topping charity single occupies at least as much space in my brain as my second-grade teacher (who made our class sing it repeatedly) and my first Sony Walkman (purchased around the time of its release).

News: Pop Songs Meant For Other Singers

"We Are the World" wasn't just a pop-culture event; it was a bona fide movement. Inspired by the success of Band Aid's 1984 charity release, Do They Know It's Christmas?, entertainer and activist Harry Belafonte came up with the idea to record an American track for famine relief in Africa.

Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian produced the song, which was penned by two of the biggest musicians at the height of their fame: Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. More than 45 other »

Call this a true meeting of the Gs! Warren G and Kenny G decided to make history Monday night when they appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live together. Combining their epic musical skills, the unlikely duo took center stage for a funk-drenched performance of the 1994 classic hit "Regulate." "One of the funnest performances i've ever done!" Kenny wrote on Twitter with a link to the viral video. "#KennyAndWarrenG" For those who don't recall, the original track relied heavily on a sample of Michael McDonald's single "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)."  "It was a record that I always loved, from being a kid and my parents playing »

Words that probably no one ever thought they would type: you're really going to enjoy this Kenny G remix. It's, dare I say, not terrible. In fact, it's a pretty sweet jam. Check it out, and if you haven't seen it, watch Jimmy Kimmel's post-Oscars sketch. »

The clarinet has never been so gangsta. Kenny G teamed up with rapper Warren G to perform the emcee’s old hit with Nate Dogg, “Regulate,” on “Jimmy Kimmel Live’s” #MashUpMonday last night — and it was awesome. Also Read: Jimmy Kimmel Teaches Eddie Redmayne, Jennifer Anniston How to Act After Oscars (Video) The two completely different music styles matched up shockingly well on the ABC late-night performance, which the Hollywood crowd in attendance surely appreciated live as much last night as the internet is this morning. Watch Kenny and Warren G 'Regulate' on 'Kimmel'

24 February 2015 6:34 AM, PST | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

Two of the music world's realest Gs joined forces on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Monday night: Warren and Kenny G took the stage for a funk-drenched, yet smooth, performance of the latter's 1994 classic "Regulate."

Kenny G dutifully recreated the song's slinking synth line on his trusty soprano saxophone, but also provided melodic assistance as the late, great Nate Dogg's original vocals played over the loudspeaker. While he stayed on top of the hook at first, it wasn't long before Kenny G was making outlandish runs on his sax as a »

Jimmy Kimmel Live!'s post-Oscar specials usually feature a star-studded fake movie trailer, like Movie: The Movie, but this year, the late-night host switched things up by recruiting A-listers like Jeff Bridges, Lupita Nyong'o and Matt Damon (or Damen, as it's spelled) to enroll in "The Kimmel School of Perfect Acting." For the sketch, the host portrays "Jim Kimmel," a Whiplash-ian teacher of the performing arts with the reputation of being "the greatest, most prolific and revered acting coach who ever lived."

28 January 2015 10:41 AM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Kenny G helped bring Saxophones, smooth jazz and adult contemporary to the mainstream, and apparently, he also helped get sweet, sugary coffee beverages into Starbucks. Specifically? The Frappuccino! The 59-year-old musician talked to Bloomberg News Tuesday about investing in the Seattle-based coffee chain early on thanks to a tip from his uncle.
