After a busy year, Singapore film making is now additionally celebrating the selection of “Pop Aye” as the opening movie in the 2017 Sundance Film Festival’s World Cinema Dramatic Competition section.

The road trip drama is the first feature by Tan and the first time that a Singapore film has found such a prominent position in Sundance.

It has also secured international sales representation through Cercamon. The Dubai-based sales agency was established last year by Sebastien Chesneau, former sales head at Rezo Films International.

The film’s selection comes after a banner year that included the selection of Boo Junfeng’s Apprentice and K Rajagopal’s “A Yellow Bird” for slots in different sections of the Cannes festival.

Production is by Lai Wenjie at E&W Films and executive production by Giraffe Pictures. Giraffe is the production label of director Anthony Chen, who won the Camera d’Or at Cannes in 2013 with “Ilo Ilo. »

[Review] Boo! A Madea Halloween

22 October 2016 2:52 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

You know you are in trouble when the funniest part of a movie is Madea’s discussion of her retirement account. (She calls it her “Ho-01K” account, because she couldn’t open a 401K due to her illegal income.) Yes, it might finally be time to pull the plug on Madea, the strong-willed former stripper who just so happens to be everybody’s wacky aunt.

In his latest outing, the man behind Madea seems bored with his own creation, yet Tyler Perry only has himself to blame as writer, director, star, producer, and executive. His usual freedom and autonomy to green-light any project has led to interesting work the studio system might have passed on, like Daddy’s Little Girls and the somewhat brilliant Why Did I Get Married Too?. As of late, Perry has slowed down on the theatrical side, leaving an unusual two-year gap between his latest »

Um, excuse me? Has anyone seen an updated copy of the Empire Entertainment Hr Manual?

Related2017 Renewal Scorecard: What’s Coming Back? What’s Getting Cancelled? What’s on the Bubble?

I mean, far be it from me to encourage another frivolous lawsuit in this economy, but with executive assistants “multitasking” under Lucious’ desk, random delivery guys showing what Brown can do for Anika, and Shyne using artistic differences as an excuse to choke out Nessa in the studio, it’s only a matter of time before a lesser power in the Lyon family melodrama lawyers up, channels Rihanna and declares, »

The Girl on the Train, The Accountant, Moonlight, and more of what to watch in OctoberThe Girl on the Train, The Accountant, Moonlight, and more of what to watch in OctoberAdriana Floridia10/3/2016 10:23:00 Am

October is one of our favourite months of the year, because we can start wearing sweaters, leaves are falling, and we can justify horror movie marathons all month long.

In theatres, however, we are getting a very interesting mix of thrills, scares, laughs, and some indie gems that caught our eye when they played the Toronto International Film Festival last month. That’s right, awards season is on the verge of beginning, and October features a couple of those highly buzzed titles. Among these are Moonlight and The Birth of a Nation, as well as some good old fun at the movies, like Tom Cruise returning as Jack Reacher, or Tom Hanks’ reprisal of Robert Langdon in Inferno. »

Here are some of our favourites:

A Monster Calls Poster Awakens a Wild Creature

16 June 2016 9:19 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

This fall, one of the most unique movies will be, without a doubt, A Monster Calls. The family drama will introduce legendary actor Liam Neeson as a mythical creature who befriends a young boy. Today, we have your first look at the official one-sheet poster, which gives us a sneak peek at this monster in hiding. The tagline promises that 'Stores are Wild Creatures'.

A Monster Calls is a visually spectacular drama from director J.A. Bayona (The Impossible). 12-year-old Conor (Lewis MacDougall), dealing with his mother's (Felicity Jones) illness, a less-than-sympathetic grandmother (Sigourney Weaver), and bullying classmates, finds a most unlikely ally when a Monster appears at his bedroom window. Ancient, wild, and relentless, the Monster guides Conor on a journey of courage, faith, and truth. Toby Kebbell plays Conor's father, and Liam Neeson stars in performance-capture and voiceover as the nocturnally visiting Monster of the title.

A Monsters Call comes as an interesting change of pace for Neeson, who has become an action icon in the later half of his extraordinary career. The movie is an adaptation of Patrick Ness' beloved novel, with the writer adapting his own screenplay. As of yet, we haven't really gotten a great look at the monstrosity hiding at the core of this heart-tugging fantasy. But he is starting to come into focus here on this teaser.

The movie's story is actually based on an original idea by the late Siobhan Dowd. A British writer and activist, she is best known for a body of work that appeals to children and young adults. A Monster Calls has been published in almost 30 languages, and the novel has won many prestigious prizes worldwide, including the distinguished Carnegie Medal and, for illustrator Jim Kay, the Kate Greenaway Medal.

Bel&#233n Atienza is producing, marking her third collaboaration with Bayona, following The Impossible and his directorial debut, The Orphanage. Executive producers include Participant's Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King, along with River Road's Bill Pohlad and Mitch Horwits. Production on A Monster Calls got under way last September, with principal photography taking place in Spain and England.

A Monster Calls is set for release on October 21, 2016, which puts it up against Lionsgate's Boo! A Madea Halloween Story, Paramount's Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, 20th Century Fox's Keeping Up With the Joneses, Universal's Ouija: Origin of Evil and PureFlix's I'm Not Ashamed. Coincidentally, Felicity Jones also stars in Inferno, arriving October 14, meaning she will have two of her projects debut in back-to-back weekends. While we await the next trailer for A Monster Calls, which may give us a better look at this wild creature, take a look at the first poster and marvel at the adventure that awaits.

How would you program this year's newest, most interesting films into double features with movies of the past you saw in 2015?Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2015—in theatres or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2015 to create a unique double feature. All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2015 fantasy double feature.
