Animal House and The Blues Brothers Blu-ray Reviews

8 August 2011 3:00 PM, PDT | | See recent news »

Let’s call it: Nation Lampoon’s Animal House and The Blues Brothers are the most influential comedies of their era, and two of the most influential comedies of all time. It’s doubtful anyone who makes comedies these days doesn’t revere these films, from Judd Apatow (considering Freaks and Geeks) to Todd Phillips (whose Road Trip is inarguably indebted). The Blues Brothers was the first Saturday Night Live spin-off film, and Animal House launched John Belushi, which came out within weeks of Chevy Chase’s Foul Play, both of which showed that SNL could launch comedy stars, so everyone who came after owes to Animal House (which was a much bigger hit than Foul Play). And this is all due to one man: John Landis. Our reviews of the Blu-rays of Animal House and Blues Brothers follow after the jump. Animal House is a perfect comedy. It holds »

Animal House - Blu-ray Review

Bluto tells me that this is the best that Animal House has looked on home video and I have to trust him since he.s pre-med. The ultimate college party movie finally arrives in high definition so rev up the Deathmobile and go along for the ride. In 1962, Faber College freshmen Lawrence Kroger (Thomas Hulce) and Kent Dorfman (Stephen Furst) are looking to pledge to a fraternity. The duo visit the big frat on campus Omega Theta Pi, Gregory Marmaland (James Daughton), the Omega president, Douglas C. Neidermeyer (Mark Metcalf), member and psychotic Rotc captain, make Kroger and Dorfman unwelcome in favor of more simpatico pledges like Chip Diller (Kevin Bacon). Kent.s brother was in Delta Tau »

Animal House Blu-ray Review

25 July 2011 9:20 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

One would be hard pressed to find a comedy, or movie in general, that is quite as beloved as John Landis' 1978 opus to slacker-dom, Animal House. With it, Landis set out to make a silly college film yet would inadvertently create the "R-rated, gross-out" genre of comedy that nowadays is a dime a dozen. Filled with several soon-to-be stars (Belushi, Kevin Bacon, Karen Allen), the film has an excellent cast with a lot of raw talent, but finds itself far from without its flaws.

Animal House tells the story of two dorky college freshmen Lawrence Kroger (Thomas Hulce) and Kent Dorfman (Stephen Furst) trying to find spots within the hoity-toity fraternity of Omega Theta Pi, but find themselves becoming members of the most beleaguered frat on campus, Delta Tau Chi. The Delta's, led in part by the scene-stealing Bluto Blutarsky (the late John Belushi), have long been in thorn »

Universal Studios Home Entertainment continues to tap its library of awesome comedies from the 1970s and 1980s with the premiere of 1978 ’s classic National Lampoon’s Animal House on Blu-ray on July 26.

"Toga, toga, toga," Belushi cried ... and comedy history was made in Animal House.

We don’t have to sit hear and tell you anything you haven’t already heard about the Delta House fraternity and its roster of animals, including such superstar frat boys as John Belushi (whose Blues Brothers comes to Blu-ray the same day), Tim Matheson (No Strings Attached), Tom Hulce (Amadeus), Stephen Furst (TV’s Bablyon 5) and Bruce McGill (TV’s Rizzoli & Isles). Throw in Donald Sutherland (The Mechanic), Karen Allen (Raiders of the Lost Ark) and John Vernon (Dirty Harry) as the evil Dean Wormer, and you’ve got one helluva toga party going on!

The new Blu-ray disc won’t have any new special features, »
