Last month, Blumhouse and Universal’s Happy Death Day successfully retrofitted the ever-growing subgenre of Groundhog Day-adjacent films to the slasher movie form. So it only stands to reason that there must be other types of time-loop thrillers we can see, right? And now here’s one that has war themes and Mel Gibson and Frank Grillo to boot.
Indeed, as revealed via Deadline, Gibson and Grillo are teaming with director Joe Carnahan for Boss Level, a new action-thriller about military veterans with a time-bending premise. Gibson is currently starring as the father of Mark Wahlberg’s character in “Daddy’s Home 2” at Paramount. The new movie sees Stallone and Bautista’s characters again join forces to break out one of their team members from an inescapable prison. The pic is directed by John Herzfeld (“Death and Life of Bobby Z,” “15 Minutes”) from Miles Chapman and John Herzfeld’s script.
The film is now beginning principal photography. Lionsgate will release the completed picture.

The sequel, directed by Steven C. Miller and tentatively titled Escape Plan 2: Hades, will see the return of Sylvester Stallone’s super-gruff inmate Ray Breslin. Despite rumors to the contrary, Arnold Schwarzenegger (Emil Rottmayer) isn’t involved in the prison sequel whatsoever, allowing the void to be filled by none other than Dave Bautista.

The trade blog says that Miles Chapman, who wrote the first two films, is currently writing the third.
Escape Plan 2 is set for a 2018 following the success of the original back in 2013. The action film, which also starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, grossed a touch over $137 million around the world, most of which from the Chinese market.

Robbie Brenner filed suit in L.A. Superior Court on Tuesday alleging that she was “pushed aside” by producers Randall Emmett and George Furla. Brenner alleges that she has not received any backend participation on the original film, though it grossed $135 million worldwide. She also contends that Emmett/Furla are moving ahead on “Escape Plan 2” without her, in violation of her contract.
Brenner, a former Relativity Media executive and a producer of “Dallas Buyers Club,” says she first set up the project with Summit Entertainment in 2008 under the working title “The Tomb.” In 2010, she said she met Emmett on a plane, where they discussed projects each had in development.
