What The Running Man teaches us about 2017

Ryan Lambie Oct 26, 2017

Eighties action flick The Running Man was set in a dystopian version of the present. So what did the movie get right about 2017?

"By 2017, the world economy has collapsed. Food, natural resources and oil are in short supply. A police state, divided into paramilitary zones, rules with an iron hand. Television is controlled by the state and a sadistic game show called The Running Man has become the most popular program in history..."

Blu-ray Review – Miracle Mile (1988)

Miracle Mile, 1988.

Directed by Steve De Jarnatt.

Starring Anthony Edwards, Mare Winningham, Denise Crosby, John Agar, Lou Hancock, Mykelti Williamson, and Kurt Fuller.

Synopsis:

After answering a pay phone at four in the morning and hearing a message warning of all-out nuclear war, a young man must find his new love and try and survive the upcoming Armageddon.

Creating a rare form of genre shifting, high-concept fantasy, Miracle Mile is a memorable blend of anxiety dream, satirical humour and romantic adventure. First written in 1983, writer/director De Jarnatt bought back the rights to his compelling script and took on the project himself five years later. The decision proved to be a excellent one, and today the film stands up extremely well.

Harry (Anthony Edwards, ER, Top Gun) is a young visitor to La who happens to meet the love of his life Julie (Mare Winningham, St Elmo’s Fire) at a local museum.

James Corden on Why U.S. Networks Failed to Successfully Adapt ‘Gavin & Stacey’
British romantic comedy “Gavin & Stacey” was a huge hit across the pond, and seemed ripe for a U.S. adaptation a la “The Office.” And indeed, both NBC and Fox tried to make American versions of the show – but James Corden, who created the series with Ruth Jones, knows why those remakes fell flat.

“They never understood what the show was about,” Corden said of the U.S. networks. “They would buy the show and immediately change it.” Corden spoke Sunday to an audience of “The Late Late Show” fans at EW’s PopFest in Downtown Los Angeles.

“Gavin & Stacey” followed the budding relationship between Gavin (Mathew Horne) from Essex and Stacey (Joanna Page) from Wales, and how their families are brought together. Corden played Gavin’s best friend, Smithy, while Jones was Stacey’s pal Nessa. The show launched in 2007 on digital channel BBC Three, but was so popular

Ahead of the back-to-back final two hours airing tomorrow on CBS, creators Robert and Michelle King (The Good Wife) talked to HitFix about what viewers can expect to happen next in their wacky tale of Capitol Hill being overtaken by brain-eating extraterrestrial bugs. Last week’s episode left off with Luke meeting the CIA “director’s director,” who informed him about the bugs. So Luke is finally in on (and believing) the truth about the bugs, but it looks like the brass at the CIA are infected with bugs too. Now Luke, Laurel, Gustav, and Rochelle (and also recently, finally in-the-know Gareth!) have to decide how they’re going to contend with the CIA. “The biggest
