Joe Henderson always had the respect of fellow musicians and hardcore jazz fanatics, but for a long time it seemed the closest he'd get to fame was his brief stint in Blood, Sweat & Tears (years later he reminisced, in one of my favorite interviews, about how that short period was when sax companies wanted his endorsement and gave him free horns). Hardly fair considering that he spent a quarter century ranked among the top three tenor saxophonists alive, along with Rollins and Shorter. Then, almost miraculously, Verve put together a masterful production/promotion campaign that made him more famous in his last decade than he'd ever been before. Alas, emphysema took him at age 64, but he'd managed to leave an impressive legacy with nary a misstep -- he never made a bad album, and his appearance on anyone else's album was always a mark of quality. While it’s easy and natural to assume that wayward drifter Brennan Marley (Toby Hemingway) is the eponymous criminal of the low-key thriller The Silent Thief, actually all of the characters in the film tend to keep mum about their lives of quiet desperation. The nice and seemingly normal suburban family that Brennan infiltrates are all leading lives of quiet desperation that make them easy prey.
The plot kicks in pretty quickly when Brennan is automatically welcomed with open arms into the Henderson family, who are renting out their son Mike’s (Cody Longo) room while he’s away at college. While there’s the perfunctory glancing at Brennan’s driver’s license, none of the Hendersons ever really bother to verify his identity or, probably more importantly, his sanity before they start treating him as a Mike substitute.
At first, it doesn’t totally seem quite believable that a »

Every year, the five major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox and NBC) order pilots to be considered for the fall season. A pilot, as you may know, is the first episode of a TV series and the final step in a long development process from idea to screen.
From the 87 drama and comedy pilots ordered this year, a new crop of television shows will be selected -- and I read the scripts for each and every one of them. Over the course of this week, I'll walk you through the network's pilot slates, offer a bit of analysis on their present schedules and provide you with a rundown of the drama contenders. (Plus, a little bit of info about the comedies, too.) Of course, not all of these shows will find their way to your TV set -- in fact, most of them you may never hear of again. »

"Psych" is wrapping up its sixth season with just three more new episodes until it returns in the fall of 2012 to kick off Season 7. "Autopsy Turvy" is the next episode and features - who else? - Woody the coroner (Kurt Fuller).
It isn't all fun and games for Woody, though. Shawn and Gus have to scramble to find out a body's cause of death after Woody is in danger of being fired for making a mistake. Woody apparently mistook a bus crash victim as an accident when it may not have been. Plus, an old flame named Grace is back in Woody's life. Woo woo.
And in a fun subplot, French Stewart guest-stars as a man obsessed with murder and also obsessed with Shawn and Gus. Fun stuff. "Psych" airs Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. Et/Pt on USA.

Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 7, Episode 16 of The CW's "Supernatural," "Out With The Old."
What initially appeared to be a typically humorous, filler episode of "Supernatural" actually gave us some big developments on the mythology side of the show, as one of the leviathans dropped their master plan (or at least their PR-friendly master plan) on Sam and Dean at the end of the episode. So what do these ancient, terrifying, people-eating monsters want to do now that they're out of their cage?
Cure cancer, apparently.
Yeah, I'm not buying it either, and I'm fairly sure there are easier ways to go about solving one of mankind's biggest problems than snacking on us and surreptitiously buying up obscure pieces of real estate to use as research labs. So, what's their real agenda? I'm wondering if paranoid Frank uncovered the truth and brought the wrath »

The Silent Thief is the debut feature film by Jennifer Clary.
Brennan Marley (Toby Hemmingway) is an adolescent grifter who earns the trust and love of a suburban family after moving into their home while their eldest son, Mike (Cody Longo), is away at college. But, when Mike finally returns home, he’s the only one to suspect that the stranger living in his house is up to no good.
The film also stars Frances Fisher (Titanic) and Kurt Fuller (Midnight in Paris) as Mike’s parents and Scout Taylor-Compton (the Halloween remake and Halloween II) as his sister, all of whom are seduced by Brennan’s devious charms.
Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film previously reviewed Clary’s short film Dirty Girl way back in 2007, calling it an “extremely powerful film.”
