It’s been a big weekend for female comedy directors. Sitcom veteran Pam Fryman is filming her 500th episode of television, a milestone that just a few helmers have ever achieved. And tonight, Transparent creator Jill Soloway won her second consecutive Emmy Award for directing in a comedy series. Before her, the category was won twice in a row by Gail Mancuso for Modern Family. Let’s put that in perspective. When Mancuso first won in 2013, she was only the second female… »
Veteran multi-camera comedy director Pam Fryman has hit a milestone: She is currently directing her 500th episode of television. This is one of the highest career tallies behind sitcom doyen James Burrows, who last fall crossed the 1,000-episode mark. Fryman’s No. 500 is an episode of CBS’ sitcom The Odd Couple starring Matthew Perry and Thomas Lennon, which is in rehearsals to film on Monday. Early on, Fryman was on a very different career path. “I studied fashion… »

It’s often said in television that nobody knows what makes a hit. But that’s not entirely true. James Burrows has a test that has rarely failed him in his 40-plus years of directing multicamera comedy series.
When working on pilots, Burrows likes to bring in an audience to watch a bare-bones run-through after a few days of rehearsal. No amount of focus-group testing of the finished product can tell him more than the first impression of an impartial crowd.
“For most of my hits, those run-throughs have been through the roof,” Burrows says. “That’s how I gauge the show. I see if they like the characters and the actors they don’t know. That’s how you know what you have.”

Nick Braun has been cast as the male co-star in CBS’ romantic comedy pilot “My Time/Your Time,” which chronicles the relationship of a young couple dating long distance, Variety has learned.
Braun will play Wade, a charming guy who’s always had things come easy for him — friends, girls, jobs — which is why he decided to move to L.A. and give the big city a shot. Real adult life turns out to be a shock, and it’s a lot harder to get what he wants than he realized, but he’s actually looking for something bigger, though he doesn’t know it yet. Levy, who plays Braun’s on-screen girlfriend, will play Marla, »

Jane Levy – star of Suburgatory and the Evil Dead remake - has been cast in the upcoming CBS sitcom My Time/Your Time, a new comedy from the minds of Hilary Winston and How I Met Your Mother‘s Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. The main writing duties of My Time/Your Time were taken up by Winston, who adapted the new show from a web series called 7P/10E.
The basic idea of the web series chronicles the budding romance of a couple who meet online and decide to enter into a long-distance relationship. The story of 7P/10E was told through a series of text messages, social network posts, and Skype chats posted on YouTube (where the series proper played out), but it’s unclear how heavily My Time/Your Time will incorporate those elements into the television adaptation.
