German electronic music pioneer Edgar Froese, founder of influential instrumental electronica group Tangerine Dream, died Jan. 20 from a pulmonary embolism in Vienna. He was 70.

Tangerine Dream composed soundtracks for numerous films including “Sorcerer,” “Risky Business,” “Firestarter,” “Thief,” “Vision Quest” and “Miracle Mile.”

In 2013 Froese and Tangerine Dream collaborated with Rockstar Games to help produce the “Grand Theft Auto V” soundtrack.

Born in what is now Sovetsk, Russia, Froese enrolled at the Academy of the Arts in West Berlin to study painting and sculpture. He formed the psychedelic rock band the Ones in 1965 and was invited to play for Salvador Dalí at his villa.

Froese went on to form Tangerine Dream in 1967. Its lineup changed through the decades but the band remained active, releasing more than 100 albums. Tangerine Dream’s music was influential in the development of a number of genres including electronic dance music, new age music and krautrock.
