He died three weeks before a scheduled new TV-production of his famous sketch Der 90. Geburtstag oder Dinner for One (1963) (TV). The show was to be re-shot in color.

Started working in a fish processing plant in Grimsby, but was fired because he entertained his colleagues with parodies and jokes.

Although often playing a drunk, he was a teetotaler.
