Review: ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ Amusingly Translates Charms of Beloved Series to The Big Screen

22 July 2016 10:18 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

It would take a comedic genius like Joanna Lumley to turn the single word “Gabon” into a three-act play. But it is the visionary Jennifer Saunders who wrote the joke, gave it to her partner in crime and brought the outrageous world of “Absolutely Fabulous” to life. And for that, we should all be in awe. Saunders is the star and creator of “Absolutely Fabulous” — “Ab Fab,” to fans — the movie based on the hit series that ran on BBC One for twenty years, and one of the most successful series-to-movie adaptations of the last decade.

Not that “Absolutely Fabulous” is a cinematic masterpiece, but unlike the big screen versions of “Sex and The City” or the just-released “Looking,” “Absolutely Fabulous” captures the irreverent fun of the series using an appropriately absurd plot device and does not read like a tired excuse to put the characters back in a room together. »

Jennifer Saunders Says Her Dream ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ Prequel Would Star Amy Schumer and Lena Dunham

On Wednesday night, being beyond fabulous was obligatory to gain entry into Leicester Square’s Odeon for the world premiere of “Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie” in London. Drag queens by the dozen littered the golden carpet, blinding fans with sequin reflections and glistening full body latex — a scene that made star and scribe, Jennifer Saunders, and partner in Lacroix-covered crime, Joanna Lumley, look shockingly under-dressed.

To date 2016 has proved a grim year for celebrity survival. So it was joyous news that Kate Moss’ reported demise, having drowned in the river Thames, never to pout again, was merely the plot for the film.

Quarter of a century on from its small screen conception, what made here and now ripe for the resurrection of faux fashionistas, Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone? Producer, Jon Plowman, was on hand to explain the team’s simple, killer push. “Part of the reason we did this was, »

When Joanna Lumley was offered the chance to kiss Leonardo DiCaprio, she did what any sane woman would do - she stocked up on mints. “There was a lot of peppermint involved," revealed the British actress on the U.K.'s The Graham Norton Show, reminiscing about her intimate embrace in which she "went for it" with the Hollywood star in the Martin Scorsese film The Wolf of Wall Street. "We were both very clean, like a surgery.” In the Oscar-nominated film, the 70-year-old Absolutely Fabulous star plays DiCaprio's loyal Aunt Emma and the two end up locking lips on a park bench. »

Netflix and the BBC are teaming for a new four-part animated miniseries adaptation of Richard Adams' classic novel "Watership Down" which will screen on BBC One in the UK and on the streaming giant in other territories around the globe.

John Boyega, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Ben Kingsley and Gemma Arterton are all set to lend their voices to the project, the third notable adaptation of the work following the 1978 film with John Hurt and Richard Briers along with a late 1990s animated TV series with Stephen Fry, Rik Mayall and Dawn French.

The 1972 novel is set in the idyllic rural landscape of southern England. The story follows a band of rabbits on their flight from the intrusion of man and the certain destruction of their home.

Noam Murro ("300: Rise Of The Empire") will direct from a script by Tom Bidwell ("My Mad Fat Diary").

Oh no! It’s the new Churchill advert

2 April 2016 1:00 AM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

In these times of austerity the first thing to go is the showbiz razzle-dazzle and poor Churchy’s been left with an animated tyre

A British bulldog with a name that’s shorthand for wartime stoicism, Churchill is a solid mascot with a hint of stock nationalism thrown in for good measure. Despite looking like an entry to a Ukip junior colouring competition, he has long brought home and car insurance to the masses, minus any questionable politics. And with a vocabulary limited to “Oh yes” and “Oh no” he tends to leave those around him to do the heavy lifting when it comes to conversation.

In the past that’s meant cameos from telly personalities such as Vic Reeves, Martin Clunes and Dawn French. In these austerity-hit times, however, his companions have been replaced by cartoon thingamajigs: a plummy cat-scratching post; a paranoid jewellery box; and even a pair »
