'Marley' leads pack on Christmas weekend

28 December 2008 10:00 AM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

The weather outside might have been frightful in much of the country and retail sales were down, but many responded to the tough times by heading to the movies during the Christmas holiday, where "Marley & Me," the tale of a big, lovable dog, scored a wow bow.

There were plenty of presents to go around: Fox's "Marley," Paramount's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and Disney's "Bedtime Stories," all of which opened Christmas Day, immediately established themselves as the top-three Dec. 25 bows of all time with openings of $14.7 million, $12 million and $10.6 million, respectively. In terms of all-time best Christmas days -- irrespective of when a movie opened -- "Marley" ranked second only to 2004's "Meet the Fockers," which opened on a Wednesday but built to a single-day Christmas take of $19.5 million on its first Saturday.

Even MGM/UA's historical thriller "Valkyrie" shared in the holiday spirit, scoring a stronger »

Marley & Me

24 December 2008 10:00 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Marley & Me Directed by: David Frankel Cast: Jennifer Aniston, Owen Wilson, Alan Arkin, Eric Dane, Kathleen Turner Time: 2 hr 5 min Rating: PG Plot: A family is both cursed and blessed by the most hyperactive, naughty, and nuerotic dog that ever lived. Who’s It For? Dog lovers and fans of the book. Expectations: The previews were funny and I really enjoy both Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston. I was expecting cute and light and funny. Scorecard (0-10) Actors: Owen Wilson as John Grogan: Owen Wilson, like Vince Vaughn, is at his strongest when he is given room to adlib. In Marley & Me he is stymied by his lack of wiggle room, which probably stems from the fact that he is playing an actual person. Wilson is always adorable, but his performance feels somewhat restrained and, at times »

Fierce competition at Christmas boxoffice

23 December 2008 2:00 PM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

It may be the season of peace on Earth, but at the boxoffice this holiday weekend it will be all-out war with five new wide releases competing to carve out territory.

Family audiences are expected to flock to the comedy/fantasy "Bedtime Stories" and the canine hijinks of "Marley & Me." Adults can pick between the star-crossed lovers of "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and the military assassins of "Valkyrie," while genre fans can head off to the graphic novel adaptation "The Spirit."

Upping the competitive ante, Miramax Films is moving its awards contender "Doubt" into more than 1,267 theaters in North America. And last weekend's openers "Yes Man" and "Seven Pounds," which were dinged by severe weather across the country, could demonstrate stronger-than-average holds as audiences shovel out.

"It bodes well for all of us because there are a lot of films, and it should be fun for the audience »

Box Office

Marky Mark Wahlberg is the box office champion with Max Payne. The film should manage about $20 million over the weekend giving 20th Century Fox their first solid hit in months.

Oliver Stone’s W bucked the political movie trend by making a solid bit of cash. Grossing around $12Mm for the weekend the film should be a modest hit. Considering the current political overkill going on in the press this is a considerable coup.

The Secret Life of Bees had a modest opening too, and should match »

Brad Pitt Takes On 'Moneyball', Too

17 October 2008 5:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Brad Pitt's got a busy schedule. Not only has he attached himself to George Miller's outer-space adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey, but he's also planning to star in an adaptation of Michael Lewis's non-fiction Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game. Moneyball is an insider account of the way Billy Beane put together the 2002 Oakland Athletics, using the power of scouting and sabremetrics to overcome a financial disadvantage. (The A's went 103-59 that year, winning the division but losing in the first round of the playoffs to the Minnesota Twins.) It's kind of a nerdy book, as you can imagine -- the A's defy the odds... through the magic of computerized statistical analysis! -- but it does have the classic underdog framework that has done wonders for a lot of sports movies. Pitt would be great for the role of Beane, who »

Brad Pitt in Moneyball?

Steven Zaillian will adapt Michael Lewis’ "Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game," a nonfiction bestseller which David Frankel is helming for Columbia. Apparently, the project is being developed as a potential starring vehicle for Pitt. The book follows Billy Beane, the Oakland A's general manager who put together a baseball club on a miniscule budget with the aid of a sophisticated computer-driven analysis for drafting players. Michael De Luca and Rachael Horovitz produce. Stan Chervin had penned an earlier draft based of the book. »

Must Watch: Charming Marley and Me Full Trailer

16 October 2008 4:25 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

What a cute little puppy! Wait - "Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog"? Uh oh! The second full trailer for Marley & Me, Fox's holiday family comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, has been released. Can I say that this looks amusing and entertaining without being beat up? It may be nothing more than a typical family comedy, but it still looks fun. Apparently the book is fantastic, I just hope the idea about learning lessons about life from such a nasty dog comes through. And being a dog lover, I really love that voiceover: "A dog doesn't care if you're rich or poor, give him your heart, and he'll give you his."
