Center Stage: On Pointe: Did Lifetime's Movie Sequel Give You Dance Fever?

22 hours ago | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

Confession: I love Center Stage. A lot. Like “I downloaded Jamiroquai’s ‘Canned Heat’ for when I need to get pumped up” a lot. I even watched the sequel Turn It Up when it premiered (exclusively) on Oxygen.

I know the films aren’t high art. All I ask for is dance sequences. Lots of them. (Sorry, Starz’s Flesh and Bone — you needed 80 percent less drama and 100 percent more dancing.) So the opening minutes of Lifetime’s threequel movie On Pointe on Saturday were a promising start, »

The film had its world premiere at SXSW 2016, where it won both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award for best documentary feature.

The film has also picked up awards at numerous other festivals, including Dallas International, Montclair, RiverRun, and DeadCenter Film Festival. Kino Lorber will release “Tower” theatrically on October 12 at New York’s Film Forum, to be followed by a national rollout, marking the 50th anniversary of the shooting. »

Bryan Cranston Is Zordon in the Power Rangers Movie

21 June 2016 5:28 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Shooting has been under way since late February on Lionsgate's Power Rangers movie, and we assumed that the entire cast had been locked down prior to production starting. As it turns out, the studio still has a few tricks up their sleeve, with Bryan Cranston coming aboard to play Zordon. We're not sure at this time if Zordon will be portrayed as he was in the original series, but Zordon serves as the Power Rangers' mentor.

In the original Power Rangers series, Zordon battled with the nefarious Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks), where Rita trapped Zordon in a time warp, while Zordon sends Rita and her minions away to a dumpster on the moon. Zordon established a command center outside of Angel Grove, California, with the help of his robot assistant Alpha 5, which ultimately lead to the creation of the Power Rangers. In the original series, Zordon was portrayed as a hologram, »

Real-Life Bears and Advice From Tarantino: 7 Of The Craziest Stories From Behind The Scenes Of ‘Swiss Army Man’

21 June 2016 2:34 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Swiss Army Man” opens in limited release this Friday and nationwide on July 1. You’ve likely heard a lot about the film already, from the walkouts at its first Sundance screening all the way to star Daniel Radcliffe touring NYC with his stunt dummy.

Yet in a month of poorly reviewed sequels, “Swiss Army Man” stands alone as a full, pure, emotional experience. The film’s co-directors, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, combine a sense of absurdity and seemingly low-hanging-fruit fart jokes with pathos and soul. They have created a new, magical thing.

This week, IndieWire’s deputy editor and chief critic Eric Kohn sat down with the Daniels, as they liked to be called, at a panel at New York City’s Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center. Showing the audience clips from the film and their previous music videos, the Daniels talked about the collision of self-awareness and genuine »

Here's How James Franco's Mother, May I Sleep With Danger? Paid Tribute to the Original

18 June 2016 7:00 PM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Lifetime's remake of the classic afterschool special Mother, May I Sleep With Danger? was only vaguely similar to the original 1996 movie that starred Tori Spelling as Laurel, a college student who slowly learns that her controlling boyfriend is actually an escaped murderer. James Franco's version of the film added lesbian vampires, a production of Shakespeare's Macbeth—yes, Shakespeare played a big role in this cinematic classic—and a discussion of gender and sexuality politics as told through vampires in literature. So many layers! But strip away the supernatural elements and pseudo-intellectual discussion and you're left with a TV event that did pay tribute to the original version. »

Jacki Weaver Says That Hollywood Isn’t Ageist: ’60 is the new 40′

18 June 2016 2:16 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Jacki Weaver, known for her breakout role in “Animal Kingdom,” recently spoke out about how the industry has been so welcoming to her. As opposed to many actresses who have spoken out about the lack of roles or how their looks affect their jobs, the 69-year-old Australian actress is declaring that “60 is the new 40.”

“There are lots of great roles for women my age,” she told The Daily Telegraph, adding that she hasn’t faced any opposition from Hollywood. “I have never come across any of that. Remember, I am in my late-60s and under 5ft, so maybe those sorts of things don’t apply to someone like me. Perhaps it happens to younger actors.”

Mother May I Sleep with Danger?: James Franco's lesbian vampire flick lacks bite

18 June 2016 3:00 AM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Less a remake of the Lifetime staple than a muddled deconstruction of queer theory, this messy movie isn’t camp enough by half

Actor/director/artist/perpetual student/sometimes Oscar host/Instagram bad boy James Franco executive-produced a remake of Lifetime staple Mother May I Sleep with Danger? and it’s a bit like his career: spreading itself so thin that it doesn’t manage to do anything with any conviction.

The original 1996 movie starring Tori Spelling as a girl who doesn’t realize that her boyfriend (Ivan Sergei) is actually a dangerous rageaholic. She ends up being saved by her mother, who realizes something weird is going on, during a confrontation in a cornfield. Originally airing on NBC, this camp classic of bad acting and insane plotting became a fixture on Lifetime’s schedule of women-in-peril flicks.
