In 1993, when her Alzheimer's disease worsened, her son Peter moved her from New York to a retirement home in San Francisco to be near him. This was reported by syndicated columnist Liz Smith. She painted in watercolors during her time there. Her father had been very successful at that. Peter was by his mother's side eight years later when she died.
