Jake Gyllenhaal has signed on to star alongside Rene Russo in the crime drama Nightcrawler for Bold Films.

The story follows a young man who gets drawn into the unusual world of freelance crime journalism in Los Angeles. Jake Gyllenhaal will play the reporter, although no character details were given for Rene Russo's role.

Screenwriter Dan Gilroy is making his directorial debut from his own screenplay. The writer-director's brother, Tony Gilroy (The Bourne Legacy), is producing alongside Jake Gyllenhaal, Jennifer Fox, Michel Litvak, and David Lancaster.

Dan Gilroy's previous screenplay credits include Freejack, Chasers, Two For the Money, The Fall, Real Steel, and last year's The Bourne Legacy, which he co-wrote with his brother Tony Gilroy.

Jake Gyllenhaal recently starred in last year's critically-acclaimed End of Watch, and will next be seen in Prisoners, alongside Hugh Jackman. »

Jake Gyllenhaal Will Play Nightcrawler

26 April 2013 8:35 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

No, not That Nightcrawler. Alan Cumming’s job is safe should he is ever brought back to the “X-Men” franchise to reprise his teleportin’ role. (God knows with all the familiar faces Bryan Singer is stuffing into his “X-Men: Days of Future Past”, leaving ol blue-skinned Nightcrawler out is kind of weird.) Instead, Jake Gyllenhaal will star in a “dark drama” (as opposed to a “light drama”, I guess) called “Nightcrawler” that will be directed by Dan Gilroy, who will be making his feature film directorial debut after writing Hollywood blockbusters like “Real Steel” and the last “Bourne” movie. “Nightcrawler” will star Gyllenhaal as “a man in Los Angeles who tries his hand at freelance crime reporting.” The film will co-star Thor’s mom (and Dan Gilroy’s wife) Rene Russo, with production set for this October. Dan’s brother Tony Gilroy, along with Jennifer Fox and Gyllenhaal will co-produce. »
