CBC dominates Gemini news, sports awards

TORONTO -- The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. grabbed a carload of trophies Monday as the Geminis, Canada's TV awards, got under way.

The public broadcaster took home the bulk of prizes for its news and current affairs shows and sports programming, as Geminis in the documentary, news and sports categories were handed out at an invitation-only dinner in Toronto.

The CBC's "Hockey Night in Canada", its Saturday-night showcase of NHL games, grabbed a Gemini for best live sport event, while Ron Forsythe earned a trophy for best direction of a live sporting event for CBC's coverage of the NHL's Stanley Cup Finals.

In addition, Kelly Hrudey, a regular on "Hockey Night", won for best studio analyst while the CBC's Bob Cole won for best sports play-by-play announcer.

The CBC also fared well in the news categories. Susan Ormiston went home with the Gemini for best reportage from Afghanistan for "CBC News: The National".

The public broadcaster's "The Secret History of 9/11" won for best history documentary. »
