DVD Review: Arachnoquake

Stars: Tracey Gold, Edward Furlong, Bug Hall, Ethan Phillips, Olivia Hardt, Megan Adelle | Written by Paul A. Birkett, Eric Forsberg | Directed by Griff Furst

Last week we reviewed Dragon Wasps, a Syfy channel produced creature feature released by Chelseas Films and this week we have Arachnoquake, a Syfy channel produced creature feature released by our friends at Signature Entertainment. I think I see a trend forming… Not that I’m complaining, I love the cheesy Syfy channel TV movies – mainly because unlike big-budget Hollywood flicks, these movies know exactly what they are and their limitations and have fun with it! This time round it’s the story of an earthquake in the Deep South that, besides making a mess of the roads, unleashes a swarm of albino spiders of all shapes and sizes who, as they do in these types of movies, converge on New Orleans to reek havoc on the locals.

2012 Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival: Official Lineup

San Diego’s Comic-Con International is the biggest event in the world devoted to genre pop culture. While the big Hollywood movies get the most mainstream press, there’s also a large, lesser known and promoted Independent Film Festival devoted to genre short films tucked away within the overall convention.

The Cci-iff, as it’s acronymed, runs completely concurrently with the convention with programming running from morning to night that includes films devoted to comic book-inspired movies, horror movies, sci-fi flicks, comedies and documentaries. There are also several panels on filmmaking sandwiched in between the on-screen entertainment.

The fest also gives out awards. This year’s juror panel includes filmmakers Steven-Charles Jaffee and Kyle Newman, plus entertainment journalist Borys Kit.

Programming blocks are broken up by genre and the full film lineup below gives the exact starting time of each short film. There’s also one feature film screening this year,

See Giant Fire-Breathing, Dog-Paddling Albino Spiders Attack New Orleans in the Trailer for Syfy's Arachnoquake

This weekend’s premiere of Jersey Shore Shark Attack begins the first of four straight weeks of new Syfy creature features. We now have our first look at what to expect three Saturdays from now when New Orleans is under siege by huge albino spiders unleashed by an Arachnoquake.

Swamp Shark director Griff Furst unleashes a new terror on Southern Louisiana in this Syfy original from writers Paul A. Birkett (Altitude) and Eric Forsberg (Mega Piranha). It’s up to Tracey Gold (“Growing Pains”), Edward Furlong (Terminator 2: Judgment Day), Ethan Philips (“Star Trek: Voyager”), and the appropriately named Bug Hall (American Pie Presents: The Book of Love) to save the Big Easy from a horde of over-sized albino spiders set loose from their underground lair by an earthquake.

I’m going to assume that the earth beneath the below sea level city of New Orleans being heavily saturated with

We managed to capture an interview / spirited rant about independent horror films with director Chris Coppola of Dracula's Widow and Eric Forsberg who wrote and directed the Syfy Channel hit Mega Piranha starring '80's pop stars Tiffany and Debbie Gibson.

Stick around after the interview for highlights of the party.

Prefer Thor’s Uzi to his hammer? Syfy and Richard Grieco have you covered in this weekend’s Almighty Thor

Because sometimes the thunder has to come at 950 rounds per minute.

Thor with an Uzi. Richard Grieco as his archnemesis Loki. The quality you’ve come to expect from an Asylum movie (the people who brought you 2010: Moby Dick and Titanic II). All bound together in Asgardian gear on Syfy. What more could you ask for this weekend?

How about the destruction of the fortress of Valhalla? Loki stealing Thor’s Hammer of Invincibility? The fate of mankind hanging in the balance? (Bet you never saw that one coming.) The ultimate showdown between the forces of good and evil? And dragons to boot!

Directed by Christopher Ray (son of Fred Olen Ray) and written by Eric Forsberg (Mega Piranha, Snakes on a Train), Almighty Thor stars Cody Deal as your friendly neighborhood thunder god, Kevin Nash as Odin,

Marvel at the Almighty Thor Trailer

Thor has an uzi! Kevin Nash is Odin! Richard Grieco unleashes his own private Dragon Wars on Los Angeles! Did I mention Thor shooting an uzi? The gods command you to watch the marvelous trailer for The Asylum’s Almighty Thor right now!

Relative newcomer Cody Deal is the Norse god Thor, having left Valhalla for modern day Los Angeles to save our world from the evil Loki (Richard “Booker” Grieco), who has slain Odin (sports entertainer Kevin Nash), stolen the Hammer of Invincibility, and intends to devastate our world by unleashing giant monsters.

The Mummy’s Patricia Velasquez co-stars as a warrior princess of some sort.

Christopher Ray (Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus) directs.

The script for this one was penned by Eric Forsberg. You may recall him as the writer-director of Mega Piranha, the greatest Asylum movie of all time, in my humble opinion. He may have done it again.

Retro Slave: Rolf Forsberg's Pa classic Ark unearthed!

If you were a child of the early 80s, chances are you watched Rolf Forsberg's post apocalyptic short, Ark, in science class. And if you were young enough like I was, it left an indelible impression on you and you'd just love to see it's breathtaking 1970s bleakness all over again.

Set in a near-future Earth where the atmosphere is so polluted that most species are extinct and humans must wear gas masks outdoors, one man finds a pond with some small breath of life left in it, builds a greenhouse around it, and delicately but diligently tries to bring it back to life.

Father of Mega Piranha director, Eric Forsberg, Rolf's history as a film and theater director is a little less schlocky. He is most known for directing such films as the award winning Parable and the very odd Stalked which has been described as "Carnival of Souls for Christ.

Character Images from Almighty Thor! Kevin Nash as Odin!

Last week I brought you word of The Asylum's marvelous mockbuster Almighty Thor that you may or may not have missed as it was on a day when there was a mad crush of movie news. Now The Asylum has posted the first pics from the set, and it's quite apparent we are in for something truly special one way or another.

Filming of Almighty Thor has begun in Los Angeles under the direction of Chris Ray (Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus) from a script by Mega Piranha writer-director Eric Forsberg.

These set pics give us our first look at newcomer Cody Deal as Thor, Richard Grieco as the villainous Norse god Loki, sexy Patricia Velasquez as a demigoddess named Jarnsaxa who trains Thor for his fight with Loki, and, of course, wrestler turned actor Kevin Nash as Odin, the supreme King of Valhalla. The last image of what appears to

The Asylum's Almighty Thor Hammers Kevin Nash, Richard Grieco, and a Top Model

Marvel's Thor may have Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins as Odin, but could Hopkins powerbomb a guy through a table like pro wrestler "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash, who will be playing the ruler of Asgard in The Asylum's mockbuster Almighty Thor? Advantage: The Asylum.

Filming is under way on the Almighty Thor under the direction of Chris Ray, his second stint at the helm of an Asylum production following Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus, which, by the way, arrives on DVD shelves and inside Redboxes this Tuesday.

When the demon god Loki destroys the fortress of Valhalla and steals the Hammer of Invincibility, only the young hero Thor can protect Earth from Armageddon.

Relative newcomer Cody Deal stars in the title role. Looking him up on IMDb reveals he looks the part far more than "Home Improvement" kid grown up Zachery Ty Bryan did when he was horribly miscast as an

Who will win: Piranha 3D or Mega Piranha?

Something fishy is going on in the world of cinema.

This weekend's much-touted release of Atmosphere's creature pic Piranha 3D, directed by Alexandre Aja, enters the arena on the heels of Syfy's recent fish-themed horror romp Mega Piranha, directed by Eric Forsberg.

And who's keeping score? Well, given the warm reception that Mega Piranha got at Comic-Con and the fact that it was Syfy's No1 watched movie premiere of 2010, probably a lot of people.

We all know about Piranha 3D, a $25million special effects extravaganza helmed by Alexandre Aja (Mirrors, The Hills Have Eyes), produced by Atmosphere Entertainment (The Spiderwick Chronicles, 300), and starring Kelly Brook, Richard Dreyfus, Elizabeth Shue and Ving Rhames.

The appeal of the film (beach babes, bouncing boobs and a girl-on-girl underwater kissing scene between Brook and porn star Riley Steele) was explained on our Lads Lounge blog.

But we don't know quite as much about Mega Piranha,

Press Release Hypes the Great Piranha 3D vs. Mega Piranha Showdown

The Asylum originally planned the release of their audacious Mega Piranha as something of a mockbuster designed to coincide with the then planned theatrical release of Piranha 3D. When Piranha 3D got pushed back to this weekend, I joked that maybe this time The Asylum can claim that the theatrical movie is mockbustering them. According to the odd press release that showed up in my box today, they've taken my jest to heart.

Mega Piranha director Eric Forsberg has thrown down the gauntlet of sorts by sending out this press release asking which over-the-top piranha flick will reign supreme in the hearts and minds of movie watchers. Read for yourself.
