Submarine movie evening: Underwater war waged in TCM's Memorial Day films In the U.S., Turner Classic Movies has gone all red, white, and blue this 2017 Memorial Day weekend, presenting a few dozen Hollywood movies set during some of the numerous wars in which the U.S. has been involved around the globe during the last century or so. On Memorial Day proper, TCM is offering a submarine movie evening. More on that further below. But first it's good to remember that although war has, to put it mildly, serious consequences for all involved, it can be particularly brutal on civilians – whether male or female; young or old; saintly or devilish; no matter the nationality, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or any other label used in order to, figuratively or literally, split apart human beings. Just this past Sunday, the Pentagon chief announced that civilian deaths should be anticipated as “a...

27: Second Set #1
Written by Charles Soule
Art by Renzo Podesta
Cover by W. Scott Forbes
Image Comics
Release date: September 14, 2011
Price: $3.99
Guitarist William Garland is back to playing music once again, but not to the level of fame where he once was.
In 27: Second Set Issue #1, William Garland returns to his former life: playing guitar and being passionate about the music. Unfortunately, Garland isn’t as famous as he once was. He thinks his life is just as bad as when he couldn’t play guitar at all. Garland craves the fame of being known and wants it badly. When an accident happens with the magical contraption built into his chest, Garland uses its power to catapult himself back into the limelight but unknowingly catches the eyes of a villain.
The previous 27 miniseries was a favorite of mine earlier this year and I was hoping for another volume of the series.

Readers, I apologize on behalf of comics this week. Not a whole lot of good new stuff (save Forgetless) is coming out this week, so my selections for this week’s installment were a struggle. To make matters worse, this will be the last installment of the year because I’ll soon be on vacation and I don’t want to have to do sh*t when I’m supposed to be loungin’.
Don’t worry, I’m mean to return from vacation on January 3rd. So expect more opinionated rambling then.
Since this column is more pessimistic than usual, here are the things I liked this year.
Best New Series: Chew, featuring a totally bizarre premise that no TV network would touch. Let’s wait for Cinemax to prove me wrong.
Best Collected Edition: Final Crisis hardcover by Grant Morrison, J.G. Jones, Doug Mahnke & Others. Morrison uses the good vs.

Image Comics has announced that its upcoming miniseries Forgetless will debut in December. Written by Nick Spencer, with artwork from W. Scott Forbes, Marley Zarcone and Jorge Coehlo, the comic book follows two struggling models-turned-assassins as they find themselves embroiled in trouble at a dangerous New York nightclub. "Forgetless is akin to Rashomon in a nightclub, just with a lot more bullets," Spencer said. "In a way, Forgetless may be the first action-thriller perfect for fans of the films Go! and Igby Goes Down, especially with how Scott, Marley (more)...
