D.C. Fontana was born on March 25, 1939 in Sussex, New Jersey, USA as Dorothy Catherine Fontana. She is known for her work on Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987), Star Trek (1966) and Star Trek New Voyages: Phase II (2004).

D.C. Fontana's name was "spoofed" as the name of the character "D.C. Montana" on the science fiction television series The Highwayman (1987): the character was portrayed by Tim Russ, who would later play "Tuvok" on Star Trek: Voyager (1995).

Owns a production company called Cardwell Productions [1997]
Was advised by Gene Roddenberry to use her initials (D.C.) on her initial scripts for Star Trek (1966) instead of her first name (Dorothy), because at the time, networks were often biased against female writers. She ended up becoming one of the show's most prolific writers with 11 episodes to her name, as well as contributing to several Star Trek spin-off series.
