Barbara Flueckiger was working internationally as a film professional for 12 years before making her transition into academia in 1992. In 1995 she received her MA in Film Studies, German Literature and Media Studies from the University of Zurich. In 1999 she defended her PhD thesis on sound design in American mainstream film also at the University of Zurich. Since 2000 she has created and led many research projects about the interaction between film technology and aesthetics.
In 2007 she completed her habilitation thesis on visual effects at the Free University of Berlin and became a guest professor for Film Studies at the University of Zurich. From 2014 to 2017 she was an associate professor ad personam at the University of Zurich and was promoted to full professor ad personam in 2017.
The European Research Council awarded the prestigious Advanced Grant to her for her interdisciplinary research on the technology and aesthetics of historical film colors.
Both her books "Sound Design" (2001) and "Visual Effects" (2008) are standard references. "Sound Design" has been printed in five editions.
