IN 1962, he co-starred in an unsold pilot for a proposed TV series called "Zelda", a spin-off of Sheila James Kuehl's character on the hit TV series, "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" (1959). In the pilot, Joe played Zelda's father.

In 1969, he starred in an unsold sitcom pilot for CBS called "Vernon's Volunteers." The plot concerned the enthusiastic but incompetent volunteer fire department which protects the small town of Vernon from burning to the ground. Mr. Flynn played the president of the town council.

In 1972, he co-starred in an unsold sitcom pilot, called "The Bear and I", as a TV station manager. Soupy Sales starred as a kiddie-show host with Janos Prohaska as the titular ursine character whom almost everyone thinks is a guy in a fur suit, but Soupy knows is really a talking bear.
