Comic Review: Batgirl: Endgame #1

Batgirl: Endgame #1 is a unique little one-shot brought to us by the folks at DC Comics. Although Cameron Stewart and Brendan Fletcher are credited with writing the story, their actual work is only represented by one word bubble which contains “Phew” and some “HaHa’s” floating in the city air. It’s 20 pages of Bengal’s artwork telling the tale in gorgeously colored illustrations.

In Batgirl: Endgame #1, there’s a mob of Jokerized madmen in Gotham City. They’re determined to spread the virus into the world beyond. The crazed crowd is going to have to get past Batgirl first!

Entitled “The Battle for Burnside,” the one-shot is a fine example of the art of telling a story through the use of images and not narrative. It makes for a contemporary and youthful experience by using cell phone emoticons, computers, signage, and texting. The whole book is a reflection of »

10 Things You Didn’t Know About Batgirl

DC Comics

Barbara Gordon is big news. Right now Batgirl is kicking up a right load of fuss thanks to an ill-judged variant cover for an upcoming issue of her solo book – artist Rafael Albuquerque’s Joker tie-in recalled the classic story The Killing Joke, which saw the Clown Prince Of Crime shoot and cripple the heroine, with some implied sexual assault thrown in for bad measure. It’s a creepy, haunting image.

Which is also totally wrong for a book which has fought to escape the dark history of the character, pitched directly at a younger, hipper and more female audience than your average comic book. Smartly, DC and Albuquerque decided to cancel that particular variant. It was probably the right call, despite what a vocal minority might tell you.

Anyway, the whole episode has thrown a larger spotlight than Batgirl’s had on her for a while now. »

14 January 2015 10:53 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I've already listed my top ten most anticipated blockbusters of the new year and now I'll take a look at the rest of the field as I've done my best to whittle things down to an even twenty films. So before you get in a huff that your favorite franchises aren't listed, just remember you can view all my anticipated blockbusters right here, I simply didn't know how to write the headline other than to just say these were my most anticipated movies without any further distinction. That said, I think I have a nice rounded list for you here. Obviously several from the major studios, but also a few overseas entries to spice things up. Plenty of Tom Hardy and Jake Gyllenhaal and a couple starring Rachel Weisz along with several of my favorite directors coming with new films for the new year. If you're wondering where films such »
