15 December 2011 2:14 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

Few genres have stood the test of time quite like the mystery. From the early days of literature, the concept of intrigue and the unknowable has piqued the interest of men and women alike.

Even one of the most famed detectives of literature, Sherlock Holmes, has graduated from the written word to the silver screen. In honor of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy we’re counting down the Top 7 most memorable crime-solving movies.

7. Seven (1995)

Recap: A rookie detective (Brad Pitt) and an aging detective close to retirement (Morgan freeman) team up to take down a brutal serial killer who is killing in the fashion of the seven deadly sins.

Reason: Anybody who’s actually seen this movie knows why this one makes the cut. Pun absolutely intended. I just have four words for you… “What’s in the box? »

Medical mayhem double feature courtesy of Shout! Factory. Bad Dreams and Visiting Hours are re-released on DVD in a new two disc set.

If you think our health care system is in trouble now, check out the death care system courtesy of these two slashers from the 80′s. Let’s wander through the halls of these hospitals from hell, shall we?

Bad Dreams

How to make a lazy clone of Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors:

1 – Villian who is a burn victim? Check.

2 – Supporting cast of psych hospital patients? Check.

3 – Said supporting cast is committing “suicide” but the attractive lead girl knows better? Check.

4 – Doctor who is relieved of his duties for unorthodox methods? Check.

5 – Cast Jennifer Rubin, who played Taryn in Dream Warriors? Check.

6 – Throw in another Nightmare alumni, Charles Fleischer from the original, A Nightmare on Elm Street for good measure.

In an attempt to throw some originality into the mix, »

Unsung Heroes: The Casting of 'Zodiac'

6 May 2011 7:00 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Hey there, film experiencers. Michael C here from Serious Film. After nearly two dozen episodes of this series I think it’s about time I touched on what is probably the most important under-the-radar job there is: the casting director.

Think about the challenges casting director Laray Mayfield was up against filling out the cast of David Fincher’s Zodiac (2007).

The sprawling, decade-spanning narrative covers dozens of important speaking roles, various cops, reporters, and victims, which the viewer is expected to keep straight as they appear and reappear over the course of the story. Actors have to be cast who can embody the personality of the character in a way the script doesn’t have time to explain. Yet within those types, she has to find performers who can deliver a unique flavor that stands out from the pack. Dermot Mulroney, Donal Logue, and Elias Koteas all make believable cops, »

Retro Review 1981: The Hand

28 April 2011 10:10 PM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

The Hand (Original Release Date: 24 April 1981)

The Hand is the answer to the question "What else did that kid who played Christina Crawford in Mommie Dearest do?"  That's the kind of movie The Hand is: one you're liable to know about because of its relationship to another movie, director, or star, and not one you're liable to have seen.  (Another answer to this question, it turns out, is The Happening, where she plays "Woman with Hands Over Ears."  I consider this neither a step up nor down, and, without bothering to look at the three decades' worth of [likely] bit parts in between, declare her career to be remarkably consistent.)

I consider myself reasonably familiar with the careers of Michael Caine and Oliver Stone, and feel I should have at least known The Hand existed.  I didn't.  It also never would have occurred to me to pair Caine and Stone, but »
