It seemed almost every great bassist in L.A. turned out for the Sunday night premiere of “Jaco,” the documentary about the late bass virtuoso Jaco Pastorius, including Robert Trujillo of Metallica, the film’s producer, Verdine White, Lee Sklar, Bootsy Collins, Hadrien Ferraud, Bunny Brunel and Darryl “The Munch” Jones, who holds up the bottom end for the Rolling Stones.
Not since Anaheim’s immense National Association of Music Merchant’s convention in January had so many professional bass players assembled under one roof.
The capacity event, which took place at downtown’s Theatre at the Ace Hotel, stood as a fitting tribute to a musical force of nature whose career took a tragic turn at the pinnacle of his creative powers. On-screen testimonials from such musicians as Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers — who introduced the film, along with Trujillo and the film’s co-director Paul Marchand — as well as Wayne Shorter, »

Traditionally, TV pilots are pitched, greenlit and then presented to network executives, who view the finished products in the privacy of their own studio-lot screening room and then, like the modern Roman emperors they are, vote with their thumbs. Never one to do things the old-fashioned way, Amazon has opted to let the audiences have a say in the process as well — the streaming service-cum-online network posts a round of comedy, drama and kids' series pilots they're considering for series on their site, and let viewers decide which ones are worth moving forward on. »
Depending on one’s point of view, Amazon’s periodic dump of pilots into the media ether is either wonderfully democratic – letting users choose what they’d like to see more of – or a bit of a copout, given the traditional process in which executives employ tools like research, yes, but ultimately have to trust their guts. Still, watching the six candidates together does offer a pretty good picture of the service’s off-kilter approach, yielding a mixed bag that contains promise but only sporadically achieves liftoff.
Nobody can accuse Amazon of narrowly sticking with one niche. The lineup — which will be available to view beginning Nov. 5 — includes two half-hours that aren’t designed to be funny, a western, two period pieces, and an almost absurdly dark satire.
Given the inroads Amazon made with the Emmy-nominated “Transparent,” the bar has clearly been raised in terms of expectations. Based on first impressions, »

We at Thn collectively love Keanu Reeves and have been immensely excited about his return this year in John Wick. Although not released in UK cinemas until April, Thn have been lucky enough to have already seen it and we can tell you that it is all kinds of awesome.
John Wick was so brilliant that it has awoken my long-forgotten admiration for Mr Reeves and compelled me to revisit his extensive back catalogue immediately. Since attending the press screening I have found myself watching countless Keanu Reeves films much to the discomfort of the husband, though technically Keanu was around first. In fact I was so enamoured with John Wick that as soon as I got home I went on a Reeves DVD buying binge – a cautionary tale to the Mr to never leave me home alone. I already had all of my favourites but I thought it important »

The Super Bowl halftime show is a coveted gig in the music world. Where else can you get paid so much and gain so much exposure for doing twelve minutes of work? The halftime show is now a media event and generates significant attention online and in the media.
So what is all the fuss about? Well, the Super Bowl in itself is, obviously, quite a big deal. It is the biggest game of the football season and pulls in hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide. But more attention goes to the fifteen minutes of spectacle than the game itself and the shows continue to grow in size and ambition.
Last year’s show, featuring Bruno Mars and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, was the most watched halftime show in history with 115.3 million viewers. That is an astronomical figure, when you think about it.
Over the years there have been awful performance, »

Pioneering woman director Lois Weber socially conscious drama 'Shoes' among Library of Congress' Packard Theater movies (photo: Mary MacLaren in 'Shoes') In February 2015, National Film Registry titles will be showcased at the Library of Congress' Packard Campus Theater – aka the Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation – in Culpeper, Virginia. These range from pioneering woman director Lois Weber's socially conscious 1916 drama Shoes to Robert Zemeckis' 1985 blockbuster Back to the Future. Another Packard Theater highlight next month is Sam Peckinpah's ultra-violent Western The Wild Bunch (1969), starring William Holden and Ernest Borgnine. Also, Howard Hawks' "anti-High Noon" Western Rio Bravo (1959), toplining John Wayne and Dean Martin. And George Cukor's costly remake of A Star Is Born (1954), featuring Academy Award nominees Judy Garland and James Mason in the old Janet Gaynor and Fredric March roles. There's more: Jeff Bridges delivers a colorful performance in »
