Jay-z Confirmed to Score The Great Gatsby

31 December 2012 8:30 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

When the first trailer for director Baz Luhrmann’s ambitious adaptation of the classic novel The Great Gatsby debuted online, many were jarred by the juxtaposition of Jay-z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild” against the film’s period setting.  The decision to use that song in the trailer wasn’t a complete shock, as Luhrmann has shown a propensity for populating his period films with modern music.  He had no problem mixing Shakespeare with Radiohead in Romeo + Juliet and 1900s France with Madonna in Moulin Rouge!.  Now, though, it appears that Luhrmann isn’t just repurposing existing songs for The Great Gatsby, but is having Jay-z himself provide an original score for the film.  Hit the jump for more details. Rumors have swirled for months regarding the score and soundtrack for The Great Gatsby, with previous reports noting that Prince and Lady Gaga might be providing original songs for the film. »

The Best Movie Trailers of 2012

25 December 2012 8:12 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

An effective trailer can do wonders for a film. For every movie that is guaranteed to have an audience, there are many more that need to build their own buzz, and there’s no faster way to do that than with a good trailer. A well made trailer can turn a monster movie from a first-time director starring a bunch of then-unknowns into the most-buzzed about movie for weeks, while a poor trailer can doom a movie right from the start. Every year sees some trailers that, independent of the film they’re promoting, capture one’s attention, and make people keep returning to them. Here are the trailers of 2012 that were able to do that best.

30) The Avengers

The sheer impossibility of conceiving of a large screen movie about a team of Marvel superheroes even 15 years ago cannot be understated. While the technology needed to adequately show their true might may have been present, »

‘Moulin Rouge!’ Writer Developing ‘Joan of Arc’ Series

21 December 2012 7:02 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Having worked with director Baz Luhrmann on the likes of Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge! and the upcoming adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, The Great Gatsby, screenwriter Craig Pearce will be trying his hand at adapting Kimberly Cutter’s The Maid – but this time for international television audiences.

Cutter’s novel – which tells the story of Joan of Arc – will not only grant Pearce the opportunity to see his work spread out across a multi-episode arc (no pun intended), it will also allow him an entirely different time period in which to tell the story. The Maid is told through the eyes of Jehanne d’Arc, the young French peasant who believed God had sent her to lead an army and save her country during the Hundred Years’ War.

‘The Great Gatsby’ Trailer Is the Grandest Episode of ‘TMZ’ Ever

20 December 2012 2:00 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

If there’s one thing our culture never gets tired of, it’s tabloid news. Taking a promising young pretty person, anointing them with almost mythic stature, and then feasting on their misery like psychic vampires when they eventually succumb to scandal and fall from grace…that’s the name of the game! Seeing as the new trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby sticks pretty closely to this formula, and presents things with the flashy, kinetic visual style that the director has become famous for, chances are it’s going to do a good job of selling this story to a wider audience than was willing to read Fitzgerald’s novel in their high school English class. When it was first announced that Luhrmann was going to be tackling material as generally dry as Gatsby, and filming it in 3D no less, the »

New Epic Trailer for Baz Luhrmann's 'Great Gatsby' with a Smoldering Leonardo DiCaprio

20 December 2012 11:09 AM, PST | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

When Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" explodes onto screens on May 10 --and explode it will, if the trailer's outrageously epic footage is any indication--at least two subsets of people will have reason to celebrate: Fans of Luhrmann's extravagent creative license-taking (as successfully expressed in "Romeo + Juliet" and "Moulin Rouge," and to a far lesser extent in "Australia"); and fans of Leonardo DiCaprio as a devilishly good looking romantic lead. Generally things haven't gone well for him in that department (love poison, no room on the raft, crazy dead wives, etc) and he's avoided the romance altogether lately, opting for "J. Edgar" and the evil Calvin Candie in "Django Unchained." But his smolder has not been forgotten, and even if things don't end well for him in this adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, we can look forward to the Jay Gatsby-Daisy Buchanan love affair. Take a »

'The Great Gatsby' trailer shows Baz Luhrmann's true colors

Just in case you were worried that seeing Leonardo DiCaprio's villainous turn in "Django Unchained" would ruin his Hollywood hunk status, have no fear, because the new "The Great Gatsby" trailer is here. Though the film was bumped back from its planned Christmas Day release date to May 10, 2013, this film is definitely Hollywood's holiday gift to us.

The new trailer plays up all of the quirks that we've come to love in Baz Luhrmann's films. Epic modern soundtrack? Check. Glamorous party and dance sequences? Check. Beautiful, heartbreaking love story? That's the biggest check of them all. Though the first teaser released had us on board, this new look at the film has us completely sold. If you don't get chills when you see Isla Fisher's Myrtle Wilson get hit by Gatsby's yellow car, you need to watch this trailer again (or you just didn't do your summer »

Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan 'Happy Together' in 'Great Gatsby' Trailer

If watching Leonardo DiCaprio play a vicious slavemaster in Django Unchained isn't your thing, perhaps his leading role in The Great Gatsby next summer will be a better fit. DiCaprio stars opposite Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan in Baz Lurhmann's long-awaited adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 classic novel. In this new trailer for the film, DiCaprio looks dashing in period dress, and while it's notoriously difficult to judge a movie from the trailer, this one looks pretty stunning, with car races, epic parties and sinister undertones – and the inspired »

'Great Gatsby' Trailer Hits With Flappers, Drinking and DiCaprio

20 December 2012 9:20 AM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

The new trailer for "The Great Gatsby" is overstuffed with flappers, bootleggers and Roaring Twenties shenanigans. Directed by Baz Luhrmann ("Moulin Rouge!") and starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby and Carey Mulligan as Daisy, it's very much an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel for the A.D.D. set. As the camera swoons and swoops about Great Neck, Luhrmann doesn't go for subtlety: Gatsby's green light looks like it was inspired by "The Wizard of Oz"s' Emerald City. It's a visual feast, but will Luhrmann be able to capture the novel's wounded heart in »

Leonaro DiCaprio Larger Than Life in New Great Gatsby Trailer (watch!)

Baz Luhrmann has just tipped his hand with a new trailer for “The Great Gatsby,” the highly stylized remake of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic. But why would a movie set in the Roaring ’20s include a soundtrack that includes rap music and rock and roll? Luhrmann, an Australian film director, screenwriter and producer, is best known for the 1997 film “William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet” with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes and 2001′s “Moulin Rouge!” a “jukebox” musical with Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. He shows the same eye for flourishes and detail in “Gatsby,” which also stars DiCaprio with Carey Mulligan. [...] »

Second Great Gatsby trailer lives up to its name

20 December 2012 8:38 AM, PST | Cineplex | See recent Cineplex news »

After getting dirty and despicable for his part as the villainous plantation owner/boy emperor Monsieur Candie in Tarantino's Django Unchained, Leonardo DiCaprio cleans up, and then some, for Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby and his blue eyes radiate warmth and, yes, deception, in the second trailer, hitting the interwebs some six months after the first preview dropped and this one bears the distinct imprint of its director's previous efforts - the dangerous love of Romeo + Juliet and the spectacular joie de vivre of Moulin Rouge! - while giving F. Scott Fitzgerald's beloved classic a graphic novel makeover.

Tobey Maguire brings his wide-eyed naivete to the role of Nick Carraway, wooed as he is by Gatsby's wealth and charm while not entirely sure if the facade is anything more than smoke and mirrors, and Carey Mulligan is luminous as Daisy and looks divine in the period costumes. We »

An Even Greater Trailer For 'The Great Gatsby'

Baz Luhrmann has done it again.

You may recall that earlier this year, Luhrmann released the first teaser for his upcoming adaptation of the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel 'The Great Gatsby." And that trailer was so cool, we had to put it number one on our list of the best trailers of 2012.

Just one problem with our list: We didn't expect that he would release a second new trailer today that's just as awesome.

Hey, what would "The Great Gatsby" be without an embarrassment of riches?

And this movie appears to have that in spades. First off, there's Leonardo DiCaprio, who is magnetic as the titular character, a high roller in the roaring '20s who may be harboring a dangerous secret — or several dangerous secrets. And then there's Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan, both at the top of their game, as Nick Carraway and Daisy Buchanan. Most of all, »
