Blu-ray Review: Woody Allen’s Exquisite, Romantic ‘Midnight in Paris’

28 December 2011 1:24 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – At times, Woody Allen’s new film releases stink like an old glove, and thankfully there are times when they fit like an old glove. His latest is “Midnight in Paris,” just released on Blu-ray and DVD. This is classic romantic Woody, set in the City of Lights, and featuring Owen Wilson taking on the Allen persona. It’s also featured in my Top 10 Films of 2011.

Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0

It is the idea that is sound in this film, and Allen follows through beautifully, allowing the humor to flow from the absurd situation, which is turn leads to a life lesson that is warm and deep. The ensemble cast is perfectly formed, and Owen Wilson leads them through some interesting comic and introspective circumstances. It has both the funny and familiar rhythms for veteran Woody Allen admirers, and surprising fun for newcomers.

Mulligan Refused Permission To Snap Gatsby Papers

28 December 2011 8:01 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actress Carey Mulligan was left disappointed while researching her role in The Great Gatsby as bosses at a top U.S. college refused to let her take a photo of author F. Scott Fitzgerald's original manuscript.

The British star plays Daisy Buchanan in director Baz Luhrmann's upcoming big-screen version of the famed novel, and she embarked on an intensive period of research before shooting began.

She even travelled to Princeton University in New Jersey to trawl through its archives of documents relating to former student Fitzgerald - but when she tried to photograph the author's first draft of his most famous work, staff stopped her.

Mulligan tells Empire magazine, "Baz left us loaded with research files, books to read and folders of stuff about the 1920s. I went to Princeton and got to read Fitzgerald's papers. I even saw the first manuscript of The Great Gatsby. They wouldn't let me take a photo though." »

Before The Dragon Tattoo: The Best Of David Fincher

26 December 2011 3:24 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

There is, as I’m sure you’re aware, a holy trinity of Davids working within American mainstream cinema at the present time. Fincher, Lynch and Cronenberg. For me the one that has had the greatest cultural impact in the last 20 years has to be the former. He is that very rare director blessed with both box-office success and a cult classic following.

Born 1962 in Denver, Colorado, it was Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid that gave him the film-making bug and he started shooting 8mm shorts at the ripe old age of eight. After getting a job at Industrial Light and Magic where he worked on Return Of The Jedi, he went on to direct high grade music videos, for the likes of Madonna and Micheal Jackson and commercials, one of which, for the American Cancer Society in 1984, featured a foetus smoking a cigarette. Leonardo DiCaprio, on the rebound from his break up with long-time model girlfriend Bar Rafaeli, has reportedly landed in the arms of model Erin Heatherton. That should make the catwalks hiss. DiCaprio has reportedly holding virtual auditions for a girlfriend during shooting a remake of “The Great Gatsby” in Australia, according to London’s Daily Mail. Before that, he was spotted with Victoria’s Secret model Karlie Kloss at the brand’s fashion show in New York. He’s also been seen with Australian models Alyce Crawford and Kendal Schuler and Romanian Madalina Ghenea. DiCaprio stars in the film as Jay Gatsby, a role made famous by Robert Redford in a 1974 motion picture based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic 1920s novel. Tobey Maguire plays writer and film narrator, Nick Carraway, and Carey Mulligan plays Daisy Buchanan. The roles were played by Sam Watterson and Mia Farrow, respectively in the earlier film. »

'Avengers' Baddie Hiddleston Shows His Kind Side in 'War Horse'

23 December 2011 9:00 AM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Tom Hiddleston has fast become a fanboy (and girl) favorite for his layered portrayal of slithery sibling Loki in the summer hit "Thor," and his infamy will only grow when he reprises the role (as villain numero uno) in May's hotly anticipated superhero ensemble "The Avengers."

Thankfully there sits "War Horse" smack dab between the Marvel tentpoles, otherwise Hiddleston may fall victim to that time-honored Hollywood tradition: the pigeonhole.

Steven Spielberg's family friendly epic finds the 30-year-old Londoner playing, as the actor calls him, a "very kind and decent British officer," a stark contrast from Loki's diabolical ways, and much closer (thankfully for all of us) to the real Hiddleston, who in person comes across as charming, eloquent and grateful.

Warner Bros. have released the first official stills from Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming The Great Gatsby. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan, Luhrmann’s take on the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic sees DiCaprio take on the titular role of Jay Gatsby. Due for release on Christmas Day in 2012, it’s Luhrmann’s first film since 2008’s love letter to his home, Australia. From the images below though, it looks like he’ll be channelling his 2001 hit, Moulin Rouge. Synopsis: An adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's Long Island-set novel, where Midwesterner Nick Carraway is lured into the lavish world of his neighbor, Jay Gatsby. Soon enough, however, Carraway will see through the cracks of Gatsby's nouveau riche existence, where obsession, madness, and tragedy await.

Woody Allen scored the biggest hit of his career with Midnight In Paris (Sony), a sleeper that debuted in May and hung around for the entire summer, where its moony vision of the City Of Light provided a different sort of escapism. It’s charming to a point—that point being whenever it returns to the present day from the inviting world of Paris’ Golden Age of the 1920s—but critics seemed to be grading on a curve. Encounters with iconic figures like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway are thinly sketched, and the film’s self-proclaimed “minor insight” is »

The latest adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher and Tobey Maguire, will be in theaters in 3D on December 25, 2012.
