Composer, songwriter ("Chicago", "Peg O' My Heart", "And the Band Played On"), author and publisher, educated in Germany. He later served in the German Navy and the French Foreign Legion, and came to the USA in 1900, beginning his songwriting career in Chicago, then moving in New York. He became the manager of publishing firms Harms & Company and Leo Feist & Company, and later founded his own publishing firm. He began writing background scores for silent films and then film songs after talkies were introduced, and also special material for vaudeville and night clubs. His film biography is "Oh, You Beautiful Doll".
